More about the project and PhD position
The European Commission, under its Green Deal initiative, has proposed the implementation of Digital Product Passports (DPPs) to foster circular business practices (i.e., circular economy), reduce CO₂ emissions, and enhance resource efficiency. A DPP, serving as a core data element of the circular economy, is a publicly accessible record that provides information about a product’s lifecycle to enhance environmental sustainability. DPPs leverage digital technologies to manage and disseminate product information globally and across various industries, e.g., consumer goods, food, and healthcare. They typically contain a combination of numerical, categorical, and textual data, and are often multilingual. DPPs are still evolving, facing challenges in data processing, handling missing or redundant data, and adapting to dynamic updates, while also requiring robust interpretation and linking methods to enable scalable interoperability. The SecondPass project aims to address these challenges and facilitate the scalable design and implementation of DPPs.
The primary objective of the advertised PhD position is to investigate and develop approaches for DPPs to address issues such as missing data, redundancy, dynamic updates, and interoperability at scale. In close collaboration with project partners, the PhD candidate will focus on relevant data modeling and processing approaches for data gap filling, redundancy mitigation, dynamic data integration, validation, and interoperability. The research will involve applying various techniques, such as representation learning methods and transformer-based models, to tackle these challenges for various DPP-driven circular economy scenarios.
