About the position

We are looking for a research fellow within acoustics and transducer technology.

Are you interested in acoustics and transducer technology,and want to engage in research with skilled colleagues who share your interests? Maybe you can become our new colleague at Department of microsystems at Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences (TNM). The position is available from 01.08.2026 with the latest starting date on 01.01.2027. 

This is an educational position that is primarily intended to give promising researchers the opportunity to develop academically and professionally through organised research training.

It is a condition that the person who accepts the position applies for and is granted admission to the Faculty’s doctoral programme in Technology within three months of starting in the position. 

The doctoral programme includes relevant courses corresponding to approximately six months of study, a thesis based on independent research, active participation in national and international research environments, relevant research dissemination, a trial lecture and public defence of the thesis. The research fellowship is for a fixed term of three years with pure organised research training. 

Your personnel manager will be head of department Marius Stian Tannum and your supervisor will be Professor Einar Halvorsen. The place of work will be at campus Vestfold. It is a prerequisite that you can be present at, and available to, the academic environment at your workplace during ordinary working hours.

The position is externally funded with funding from the Research Council of Norway.

About the doctoral project

The person appointed will be affiliated with the research project “Acoustic power transfer for wireless sensors”, which is led by Professor Einar Halvorsen.

The research project focuses on how to use of acoustic waves to deliver power to and communicate with wireless sensor nodes located within structures. The candidate will investigate various aspects of this problem ranging from how to make power transfer through a wall robust and versatile to how to effectively transfer power over significant distances in complicated structures. The work will be predominantly experimental work supported by mathematical/numerical analysis. It includes, but is not limited to, piezoelectric transducer design, building of experimental set-ups, performing measurements and analysis of acoustic wave propagation.  

The project is carried out in collaboration with Norwegian Industry Partners, a Norwegian research institute and an international academic partner. Some project-related travel must be expected. There is a possibility for long-term research stay abroad.  

The person appointed will be affiliated with the research group Micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems (MNEMS).

Duties

• Complete the doctoral programme up to completion of the doctoral degree within the employment period. 
• Conduct high-calibre research within the framework described above. 
• Scholarly publications
• Participate in the research group MNEMS. 
• Be prepared for changes in your work tasks after appointment. 

Qualifications

All items are requirements, unless it is specified that they are preferred qualifications.  

• Master’s degree (120 ECTS credits) (or equivalent qualifications) within within acoustics, electronic or mechanical engineering, physics, or similar field. 
• Documented relevant knowledge or skills from, e.g., course syllabus, project or thesis work, work experience or similar is an advantage.
• Good programming skills and some experience with numerical software for engineering are preferred. 
• Weighted average grade of B or higher on the master’s degree and thesis. 
• Candidates finalizing their degree in the spring semester of 2026 may also apply. The master’s thesis must have been submitted for assessment before an interview is held for the position and approved before the decision to hire must be made.
• Excellent written and oral English language skills.  
• Meet the formal requirements for admission to USN’s doctoral programmes and TNM’s doctoral programme in technologyno later than three months after starting in the position.

Language requirements

Requirements for proficiency in English

• TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-Based Test (IBT)
• IELTS – International English Language Testing Service 
• Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) from the University of Cambridge
• PTE Academic – Pearson Test of English Academic

The following applicants are exempt from the requirements listed above:

• Applicants with one year of completed university studies in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, UK or USA
• Applicants who have completed a master’s degree with English as the language of instruction in an EU or EEA country
• Applicants who are exempt based on the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir)’s GSU list (Higher Education Entrance Qualification for foreign applicants)

Applicants from Norway can confirm their English language skills by submitting their upper secondary school diploma.
