Now, we have an exciting opportunity for the right person to join our team in Bergen, Norway, as a Risk Engineer, acting as NIORD’s primary technical representative.

Who we’re after

The Risk Engineer will not only help develop technical expertise and knowledge about Offshore Renewables at NIORD, they will also foster solid relations with technical representatives of clients, brokers, the supply chain, and industry service providers.

Ideally, you possess both high-voltage transmission expertise and a solid understanding of how transmission assets performthroughout their lifecycle. Our preferred applicant is someone who understands the workings of offshore-energy-producing components, particularly Offshore Wind Turbines.

Other preferred areas of expertise and understanding include:

Subsea cables, including export and inter-array systems;

Challenges of deepwater installation and dynamic offshore conditions.

Knowledge of industry standards and safety frameworks, such as via DNV, IEC, CIGRÉ, etc.;

A strong understanding of failure mechanisms and reliability drives such as cable fatigue, installation damage, manufacturing defects, seabed movement, etc.;

An awareness of how design decisions, installation, monitoring, and repair planning can reduce risk.

Skills and personal attributes Strong communication and people skills are important, as the Risk Engineer will converse with various stakeholders, often as NIORD’s representative during meetings for ongoing projects

Fluency in English (oral and written) is a must. Norwegian or another Scandinavian language will be considered an advantage, while German, Spanish and French are also desirable.

For this role, you need to have a service-minded approach, be good at prioritizing tasks and - if needed - be fully committed to undergoing a steep learning curve in offshore renewables engineering fundamentals.

Tasks and duties The Risk Engineer will establish and maintain good relations with technical representatives of clients, brokers, the supply chain, and industry service providers. They will also be actively engaged in developing technical expertise and knowledge about Offshore Renewables at NIORD.

The position will be split between NIORD’s Underwriting (assessing and accepting risk) and Claims teams, with an approximately 50/50 workload from each side.

Underwriting tasks and duties

Assisting with the technical risk assessment of inquiries during the underwriting process -- including meeting with clients and brokers, assessing technical information, highlighting and raising concerns relevant to the project and evaluation of the client’s replies and, as such, the overall risks involved;

Identifying which risks are most relevant;

Developing a strong understanding of the intersection between real-world technical aspects of a project, merged with the coverage and premium available for taking on such risk;

Providing technical advisory services for clients and prospective clients on projects in their early phases;

Following up on “Construction All Risk” projects during the construction period, including management of meetings and discussions with the client’s project team.

Claims tasks and duties

Conducting and/or managing surveys and inspections, producing survey reports, including survey evaluations;

Supporting the claims handlers and improving their ability to understand technical issues;

Acting as a ‘sparring partner’ to the claims handlers though active engagement in the claims process;

Providing technical inputs into claims data and experience review to extract insights, identify trends, and capture lessons learned to support continuous improvement in risk understanding;

Assisting in contingency response situations as part of our Emergency Response Team.
