PhD Research Fellow in Neuromorphic Microelectronics

About the position

Position as PhD Research Fellow in Neuromorphic Microelectronics available at Department of Informatics.

The fellowship period is three years.

Depending on the candidate and the teaching needs of the department, the fellowship period can be extended either for compulsory work consisting of e.g., teaching and supervision duties and research assistance up top four years.

Starting date no later than October 1, 2026.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

Place of work is Department of Informatics at Blindern, Oslo.

Job description

As a response to the power hungriness of artificial intelligence (AI) there is a growing interest from the research community in exploring near-analog biologic brain inspired solutions to reduce power consumption in neural networks.

In this project you will be involved in a collaborative effort investigating neuromorphic mixed-signal/near-analog circuits for next generation edge-AI systems. You will gain skills in custom chip design, artificial neural networks and edge-AI system implementation. The work combines circuit-level simulation, system modeling, and in-silicon hardware prototyping to evaluate approaches against performance metrics such as energy efficiency, inference accuracy and computational latency.

The successful candidate will join the Nanoelectronics research group (NANO) and also participate in collaborative research with the upcoming SFI center; Norwegian Center for Intelligent Computers and Electronics (NICE)  Norwegian Centre for Intelligent Computers and Electronics - NTNU. https://www.ntnu.edu/nice

Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Required qualifications:

• Master or equivalent in Microelectronics or closely related discipline
• Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
• Knowledge of circuit design and simulation tools (ie Cadence, Tanner or open-source alternatives)
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English 

Candidates without a master’s degree have until June 30, 2026 to complete the final exam.

Desired qualifications:

• Practical experience in neuromorphic / neural network integrated circuit (IC) design
• Experience with CMOS circuit prototyping, PCB-design, and in-lab testing

Grade requirements:
The norm is as follows:

• The average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
• The average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
• The Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system
