PhD Research Fellow in Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology

About the position

Position as PhD Research Fellow in Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology available at the Department of Biosciences, University of Oslo.

The fellowship period is three years.

A fourth year maybe considered and it will involve 25 percent of other career-promoting work. Other career-promoting work may consist of teaching, supervision, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department.

Starting date no later than October 1, 2026.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo. 

Place of work is the Department of Biosciences at Blindern, the Life Science Building, Oslo.

Job description

Exposing animals to hypothermia can induce neuronal plasticity, improve memory functions, and protect neurons from degeneration. The goal of this project is to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms and neural benefits of hypothermia with important medical implications. To study this, the Ph.D. candidate will use mammalian cells, organoids, and animal models, and employ a range of approaches, including cell culture systems, diverse molecular techniques, and advanced imaging. 

The project will involve both internal and external collaborations, offering the opportunity of interdisciplinary research, conducted in leading labs and stimulating research environment.

What skills are important in this role?

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Required qualifications:

• Master’s degree or equivalent in Molecular or Cell Biology, or experimental Neurobiology
• Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
• At least six months of laboratory experience connected to a research project
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
• Proven experience in:
  • mammalian cell culture and aseptic techniques
  • microscopy/immunofluorescence/image analysis
  • all basic molecular biology techniques (PCR, RT-qPCR, nucleic acid and protein extraction methods, SDS-PAGE and western blot)

Candidates without a master’s degree have until June 30, 2026 to complete the final exam.

Desired qualifications:

• Background in cell or developmental biology, stem cell biology, or neuroscience
• Hands-on experience with human pluripotent stem cells, 3D cell culture systems and/or generation of organoids (especially brain organoids)
• Other projects in the lab involve C. elegans and prior exposure to this model would be advantageous

Grade requirements:
The norm is as follows:

• The average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
• The average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
• The Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system
