About the position

The Computer Architecture Lab (CAL) at the Department of Computer Science is seeking a PhD candidate in computer architecture. This PhD position is part of the Dependency-Aware Performance Analysis (DAPA) project which builds on our prior work on instruction-level performance analysis for out-of-order processors (featured at MICRO’21, ISCA’23, and ASPLOS’26). These works produce various types of per-instruction cycle stacks that explain what an application spends time on and why. Although this is clearly useful for developers and computer architects, they also need to reason about the impact of potential optimizations to avoid wasting time on implementing optimizations that ultimately do not improve performance. We believe that such analyses can be enabled by also accounting for inter-instruction dependencies – and the focus of this PhD project is to understand exactly how to do that.

About the project

The DAPA project is funded by the Research Council of Norway, started on January 1, 2026, and will continue until the end of 2031. This announcement covers the first of DAPA’s two PhD positions. DAPA is affiliated with the Norwegian Center for Intelligent Computers and Electronics (NICE). NICE is a center for research-driven innovation (i.e., an SFI) in which NTNU, the University of Oslo, and key industry players work together towards developing the knowledge and technology required to move key AI applications from Cloud datacenters to Edge devices. Through NICE, the DAPA PhD students are part of an exciting research and innovation environment.

Duties of the position

• Complete the doctoral education until obtaining a doctorate
• Carry out research of good quality within the framework described above
• Academic publications and popular science dissemination
• Participate in the activities of the CAL research group and the SFI NICE research center
• Participate in international activities such as conferences and/or research stays at foreign educational institutions

Required selection criteria

• Strong theoretical background in computer architecture.
• Documented experience with the development of computer hardware, for example, through simulation-based studies or prototyping at the Register-Transfer Level.
• You must have a relevant Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level. Master students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position and no later than October 1, 2026.
• You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale, and a C or better from your bachelor’s degree. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
• You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty’s PhD program in Computer Science.
• Good oral and written presentation skills in English, at least equivalent to level B2.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with NTNUs guidelines for recruitment positions and Regulations for the degrees philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) and philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) in artistic development work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) for general criteria for the position.

Preferred selection criteria

• Experience with empirical evaluation of computer architectures, for example, through analytical modeling (e.g., Roofline), simulation (e.g., gem5), or measurements on real hardware (e.g., perf).
• Good oral and written presentation skills in Norwegian/Scandinavian, at least equivalent to level B2.

Salary and conditions

In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 550 800,-per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary. 

The employment period is 3 years for the doctoral work. Up to 12 months of career promotion (teaching assistant) work may be added to cover the department’s teaching needs for willing and suitable candidates.

For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in Computer Science within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme throughout the period of employment.

The position is conditional on external funding.
