About the position
The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering invites applications for a PhD position focused on developing a theoretical framework for monitoring and updating adaptive learning systems (including machine learning/artificial intelligence systems) under formal assurance principles. The project aims to establish scientifically grounded mechanisms that enable learning systems to remain inspectable, verifiable, and trustworthy throughout their operational lifecycle.
Adaptive learning systems evolve through continuous updating, which introduces new challenges in reliability and assurance. Traditional engineering methods assume relatively static system behavior, whereas modern learning systems exhibit non-stationary performance over time. This research seeks to bridge that gap by developing a foundational framework that integrates monitoring and updating, along with standard-grounded assurance principles into a coherent theoretical structure.
The PhD candidate will conduct fundamental research on how monitoring information can be used to evaluate adaptive learning system behavior in real time, how updating strategies can be formally constrained to preserve reliability properties, and how assurance concepts can be expressed in a way that is compatible with emerging standardization efforts. The emphasis is on mathematical modeling and quantitative indices, system-theoretic reasoning, and formal framework development rather than application-specific implementation.
You will address the following research challenges:
- Monitoring mechanisms enabling continuous inspection and verification
- Theoretical foundations for updating mechanisms that preserve reliability and consistency
- Formalization of assurance principles that support standardized and repeatable evaluation of adaptive systems
- Integration of monitoring and updating into a lifecycle-oriented assurance framework
The project represents an opportunity to contribute to the emerging scientific foundations of trustworthy adaptive systems, with long-term impact on how learning technologies are engineered, evaluated, and governed.
Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department.
Duties of the position
- Participate in the mandatory PhD research education program
- Conduct independent, high-quality research and publish in recognized international journals and conferences
- Develop theoretical models, quantitative indices, and formal frameworks related to monitoring and updating adaptive systems
- Assist in organizing and documenting research activities, including proposals and reports
- Contribute to collaborative research activities within the RAMS group and department
Be prepared for changes to your work duties after employment.
Required selection criteria
- You must have a relevant Master's degree in Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS) or Cybernetics or Computer/Information Science with a focus on Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning or equivalent. Master students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position.
- You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you maybe considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
