About the role

Would you like to play a key role in managing marine insurance claims within an international maritime organization? Gearbulk Norway AS is seeking a structured and commercially minded in-house Claims Handler to join our Marine Insurance team. 

The position plays an important role in handling marine insurance claims across Hull & Machinery (H&M) and Protection & Indemnity (P&I), ensuring timely recovery, effective defense of liabilities, and contributing to loss-prevention initiatives across our global fleet. The role also includes follow-up on insurance documentation, premiums, and related administrative processes. 

 

What you’ll be responsible for 

In this role, you will work closely with vessels, operational teams, and external stakeholders to ensure professional and efficient claims management. Your responsibilities will include: 

Claims handling

Manage all aspects of claim events, from documentation and insurer coordination to claim strategies, communication, and case closure

Financial control

Oversee claim‑related financials, including cost estimates, reserves, cash flow, and insurance premium verification

Governance and reporting

Maintain policy and claims documentation, produce required reports, and support annual renewals with claims statistics

Loss prevention

Analyze claim trends, collaborate with underwriters, and provide insurance input for risk assessments


 

Who we’re looking for 

We are seeking a structured and proactive professional with a strong interest in marine insurance and claims handling. The ideal candidate will have: 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Law, Marine Engineering/Technology, Risk & Insurance, or a related field 
  • 1–4 years of experience in marine claims handling (shipowner, insurer/P&I club, broker, correspondent, or surveyor background) 
  • Solid working knowledge of H&M and P&I policy structures, General Average and salvage processes, and liability regimes 
  • Experience with coordinating surveys and working with international counterparties 
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and spoken; Norwegian is a plus  
  • Good analytical abilities and a structured approach to documentation and reporting 
  • Advantageous: 

  • Prior sea time or superintendent/technical experience 
  • Maritime law training 
  • Exposure to time-charter or COA commercial exposure

    Location and reporting

    This position is based in Bergen, Norway, and reports to the Head of Marine Insurance.
