About the job

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (IBM) has a vacancy for a PhD Candidate, as part of the collaboration project “Optimized Mooring system fatigue life and harbour infrastructure for floating offshore wind turbines (MoorRoWind)” involving the Department of Marine Technology, the Department of Structural Engineering and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The project addresses two critical challenges in scaling up the use of floating wind turbines (FWT): (1) the fatigue life of mooring lines for increasingly larger turbines in harsh environments, and (2) the need for upgraded harbour infrastructure to support the industrialization of FWTs. These two challenges are critical barriers to the scalability, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability of offshore wind systems.

The present position will be located in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. As floating wind turbines (FWTs) increase in size and deployment, harbor infrastructure faces new and complex challenges (e.g., water depth needs, quay structures’ bearing capacity requirement, area needs, and assembly operational limits). This PhD project aims to develop optimized designs for harbor infrastructure – focusing primarily on quay structures – to support the full lifecycle of FWTs. The objectives include: (1) Integrated design: establishing optimized designs for harbour infrastructures (e.g., quay structures) that integrates characteristics of typical FWTs and their associated assembly methods; (2) Smart maintenance: develop predictive ‘physical and/or data-driven’ models and a cost-effective sensor network (e.g., satellite monitoring, on-site sensors like strain gauges and IMUs) to track and maintain quay structure health throughout operational use.

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

Duties of the position

Collect and analyse data on relevant Norwegian harbour infrastructures, including environmental conditions (wind, wave, current) and specifications (quay area, water depth, bearing capacity, and equipment), using simulations where necessary to quantify technical challenges against various FOWT designs and assembly methods. This forms the basis for optimization
Develop numerical models for critical harbour infrastructures (e.g., quay structures) to evaluate their suitability for supporting different FOWT designs and assembly techniques and perform design optimizations accordingly
Create a predictive model of the candidate harbour infrastructure for real-time health monitoring using a cost-effective sensor network, integrating satellite-based methods and on-site sensors for continuous infrastructure monitoring
Verification the obtained methods against simulated data and validation against available field measurements
Completion of coursework during the initial part of the employment period

Required selection criteria

You must have a professionally relevant background in civil and structural engineering, coastal engineering, offshore engineering, marine technology, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, or equivalent
Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education
Master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented by 15.09.2025
You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program
You must have a strong theoretical background in mechanics and mathematics
You must have programming skills in Julia, Python, MATLAB, C, or similar
Excellent written and oral English language skills

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Engineering within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
