About the position

As companies accumulate increasingly large amounts of data to monitor and potentially enhance performance across various facets of their business, there is a growing need for methods that automate data analysis and subsequent decision-making processes. The objective of this PhD project is to develop general methods for Fault Detection, Isolation, and Recovery (FDIR) in systems governed by hyperbolic partial differential equations.

Hyperbolic PDEs model processes such as flow in pipes, water/gas distribution networks, power grids, irrigation channels, and road traffic—essentially, systems with transport phenomena and delays. A challenge in estimating parameters and states, as well as controlling these systems, arises from the fact that measurements and actuations are typically confined to the boundaries of the domain. This limitation is evident in scenarios like oil well drilling, where sensing and actuation occur on the rig, while potential faults that may threaten the safety of personnel, equipment integrity, and the environment, occur kilometers away near the bottom of the well. Examples of applications relevant to this project's FDIR focus include the detection and localization of washout (a leak between the drill string and the well) and the identification and localization of mud loss (a leak from the well into the reservoir).

The position is associated with the center for research-based innovation DigiWells: Digital Well Center for Value Creation, Competitiveness and Minimum Environmental Footprint. The center provides a collaborative environment consisting of researchers at NORCE, experts from industry, professors from University of Stavanger, NTNU, University of Bergen and a total of 17 PhD students and postdocs.

The employed candidate will be expected to fit in and contribute to this multidisciplinary environment. There will also be opportunities to collaborate and visit the center’s international partners: Stanford University, TU Clausthal, University of the Basque Country, and UT Austin.

The position in FDIR for PDEs at NTNU reports to Professor Ole Morten Aamo as the main scientific supervisor of the research.

Duties of the position

Perform research in the domain of the position – defining core research direction for the topic and providing solutions to general FDIR problems for PDEs.
Showcase and validate the solutions in simulations with NORCE’s state-of-the-art drilling simulator.
Collaborate with PhD Candidates and other researchers in DigiWells.
Publish relevant papers in top-tier journals and conferences.
Co-supervise MSc theses.

Be prepared for changes to your work duties after employment.

Required selection criteria

The main qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) in systems and control engineering (or equivalent) with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

Preferred qualifications (documentation required)

Knowledge and skills in the following areas are highly relevant: estimation theory (state observers, parameter identification), mathematics of partial differential equations, modelling and simulation, machine learning/reinforcement learning.
Experience with design of state- and parameter estimators, control systems, and software development.
Mastering of a Scandinavian language.

If you cannot document skills in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish at level A2 upon employment, you must complete Norwegian courses corresponding to at least 15 credits before the end of the employment period. NTNU will facilitate this.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations for the Universities and Colleges Act (university and colleges regulations) and Regulations for the degrees philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) and philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) in artistic development work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) for general criteria for the position.

Salary and conditions

In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 536 200,- per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.

The employment period is 3 years. If learning Norwegian (level A2 corresponding to at least 15 credits) is to be completed before the end of the employment period, the employment period can be extended by 10 weeks after completed and documented the Norwegian course.

For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD program in Engineering Cybernetics within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral program throughout the period of employment.

For the necessary academic and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.
