About the position
Climate change is evolving fast, driven by a range of human influences primarily from increase in greenhouse gases and changes in aerosol emissions. A key topic of particularly large uncertainty is how aerosols influence clouds. CICERO wants to strengthen and expand our research on atmospheric science, and is looking for a highly skilled, creative, and collaborative researcher to work in an international and interdisciplinary inspiring research institute.
CICERO has built up competencies within atmospheric science and research on the climate system, from global to regional scales, considering the full range of human-induced and natural physical processes.
CICERO has built up competencies within atmospheric science and research on the climate system, from global to regional scales, considering the full range of human-induced and natural physical processes. We seek an early-to-mid career researcher for a permanent position in atmospheric science, to work on global and regional climate modelling, in particular related to how aerosols influence clouds. CICERO is at the forefront of several atmospheric and climate system research aspects, with links to land and ocean processes. We also work to strengthen the connections between natural science knowledge about physical changes and actual climate change-related impacts on nature and society.
Key Tasks
We are looking for an experienced researcher for a permanent position. The successful applicant should have a strong quantitative and analytical background and research expertise relevant to the abovementioned research topics. The position will focus on the use and generation of global and regional climate model information, traditional and machine learning-based analysis methods, and process studies linking global to regional evolution. The successful applicant will initially work across various research projects. Applicants with interests across a diverse range of subjects are encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will work in the Atmospheric Science research group at CICERO and be part of several projects and international research networks.
The successful applicant will have a solid academic background and a solid technical skillset in atmospheric science, climate modelling and analysis. Experience with variable resolution modelling and/or downscaling is an advantage, as is knowledge of recent machine learning techniques. CICERO is involved in many concurrent research projects, so a documented ability to contribute across multiple topics is advantageous. The ability to efficiently transfer results into scientific publications and to communicate and present work at conferences and other events is expected. An interest in and ability to initiate and lead new research proposals is also expected. We seek an independent and flexible person who enjoys working in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment, across natural and social sciences, and with internal and external partners.
Qualifications
- PhD or similar level of competence in relevant areas (e.g. atmospheric processes, climate evolution, machine learning with an Earth sciences focus) is required.
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills are required.
- Experience with global or regional climate models is required (e.g. with the CESM/NorESM global or WRF regional models).
- Strong and flexible programming skills (Python, or similar) are required.
- Experience of working with GitHub would be advantageous.
- The ability to speak and write confidently in academic English is required.
- Working knowledge of Norwegian or other Scandinavian languages would be advantageous. It is expected that you learn Norwegian language after some time.
- The ability to work both collaboratively and independently is required.
- Interest in effectively communicating in the public sphere is desirable.
- Experience with writing funding proposals is desirable.
CICERO offers
- Opportunity to work directly with world leading researchers in the international research front
- International cooperation through a broad scientific network
