PhD Research Fellow in Noncommutative Quantum Models

About the position

The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a temporary 100 % position as PhD Research Fellow in Noncommutative Quantum Models from 01.10.2025. 

The position is located at the Department of Microsystems and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Campus Vestfold.

The employment period will be three years of full time with no teaching obligations, and there is a premise for employment that the PhD Research Fellow is enrolled in USN’s PhD-program in Technology within three months of accession in the position. 

About the PhD-project

Quantum theory is currently bringing a revolution to technology by introducing new concepts and advancements. However, many fundamental questions remain unanswered. A new frontier for testing quantum effects in the intersection of quantum theory with gravity at low energy scales is now in focus. 

This project focuses on investigating the implications of quantum and gravitational effects in various models by extending the formalism of quantum theory. By studying novel quantum phase space models (which include non-canonical commutation relations) the project aims to investigate impacts on the thermodynamical properties of microscopic systems and materials’ structure as well as to gain insight into potential new effects and physical behaviour across various physical systems (including crystals and materials, e.g. piezoelectrics). 

The project will combine mathematical and theoretical framework from noncommutative geometry (quantum space-times), quantum physics, statistical physics, thermodynamics and material science. The main supervisor of the PhD-project will be Associate Professor Anna Pachol. 

Qualifications

Applicants to the PhD position must have a Master’s degree (120 ECTS) equivalent higher education qualifications in Physics (with background in theoretical physics, mathematical physics, or related disciplines). Any previous experience with noncommutative geometry and quantum theory will be considered as an advantage, but strong candidates from other fields including material science or condensed matter physics, are encouraged to apply as well.

The degree must be accomplished before application deadline. However, students in the process of finalizing their degree before the scheduled commencement of the position may also apply and can be offered a position conditioned on a satisfactory result.

The candidate must have the ability to work independently and at the same time have the motivation to share knowledge and take part in team work. Personal suitability for the post will be emphasised.

It is a requirement that the successful applicant is granted admission to the university’s doctoral programme in Technology within three months of accession in the position. For admission to the Programme the weighted average grade is B or higher is usually required. 

Co-operation between staff members is an integrated part of the working atmosphere at the University of South-Eastern Norway. The candidate must be motivated and demonstrate a proven ability to work effectively within a team and in a collegiate manner to formulate and realise common objectives.

The applicant must document that they are fluent in English orally and in writing.

 

Documentation of skills in English language

Strong communication skills in English language skills are required for participation in the doctoral program. International applicants must document this with a valid certificate from one of the following tests:

• TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-Based Test (IBT). Minimum result: 90
• IELTS – International English Language Testing Service. Minimum result: 6.5
• Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) eller Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) from Cambridge University
• PTE Academic – Pearson Test of English Academic. Minimum result: 62

The following applicants are exempt from the above requirements: 

• applicants with one year of completed university studies in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States 
• applicants with a completed master's degree with English as the language of instruction in an EU/EEA country

Salary

PhD Research Fellow (code 1017): NOK 550 800 a year. Further promotion will be based on time served in the position. In special cases, employment in code 1378 (NOK 546 569 – 658 728 a year) may be considered

A statutory contribution to the state pension plan will be deducted from the employee’s salary.

The Academic Appointments Board for PhD Research Fellowships is responsible for the appointment. An expert assessment of applicants will be carried out. The candidates deemed best qualified will be invited to an interview.

Employment in this position requires a license under the Export Control Act and the Export Control Regulations.
