Applied ecology PhD: Large carnivores in Scandinavia from individual movement to population dynamics

About the position

Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) at Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) is offering a 3-year PhD position in Applied Ecology. This PhD project focuses on understanding animal movement, which can be crucial for population dynamics. 

The PhD candidate will use advanced statistical methods and multiple data sources, including genetic data and GPS tracking, to map and quantify the movements of large carnivores (wolves, wolverines and brown bears) in Scandinavia.

You will develop and apply integrated models combining spatial capture-recapture and GPS data, working with a diverse team of ecologists, statisticians, and computer scientists from institutions like NINA, INN, ENSAI, CNRS, and the University of California Berkeley. The project aims to expand analytical methods for modeling animal movement and validate these methods for other species.

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research and help answer fundamental questions in animal ecology. Note that applying for this PhD position also serves as an application for admission to the PhD program at NMBU. The PhD position is funded by NMBU.

Main tasks

The PhD student’s tasks will include: 

• Compilation and curation of available data received from different project partners 
• Development, evaluation and application of large-scale integrated population models 
• Statistical analyses, writing scientific papers and complete a PhD 
• Collaboration with other team members and partners 

The PhD student will be involved in study design and development of specific research questions. The successful candidate is expected to have a PhD education plan approved by MINA during the first months of the appointment and to complete a PhD within the PhD scholarship period. 

Competence

The successful applicant must meet the conditions defined for admission to a PhD programme at NMBU. The applicant must have an academically relevant education corresponding to a five-year master’s degree, with a learning outcome corresponding to the descriptions in the Norwegian Qualification Framework, second cycle. The applicant must have a documented strong academic background from previous studies and be able to document proficiency in both written and oral English. The applicant must document expertise and interest in the research subject.

Required Academic qualifications

• Master´s degree within a relevant scientific field, e.g. quantitative ecology, population dynamics, mathematics/statistics, data science, bioinformatics
• Demonstrated quantitative skills. 

The following experiences and skills will be emphasized:

• Experience with developing and using Bayesian models
• Experience with hierarchical models in ecology
• Experience with spatial analysis in ecology 
• Population dynamics modelling 

Personal characteristics important for the positions are: 

• Good social and collaboration skills
• Ability to work and co-operate in an interdisciplinary working environment
• Flexibility with respect to work tasks
• Creativity and ability to find solutions to practical problems
• Strong capabilities in English and, preferably, a Scandinavian language, both orally and written

Remuneration and further information

The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1017 PhD. Fellow. PhD. Fellows are normally placed in pay grade 54 (NOK 532.200,-) on the Norwegian Government salary scale upon employment and follow ordinary meriting regulations.

Employment is conducted according to national guidelines for University and Technical College PhD scholars.
