Role Summary and Purpose

We are seeking a dynamic leader who combines strong people skills with deep scientific knowledge to join Thor Medical as R&D Manager and lead the R&D team at our new state of the art AlphaOne production facilities at Herøya. The role combines scientific leadership with operational execution, ensuring that research and development activities are translated into focused daily work and closely aligned with the company’s technology development and operational needs.

Reporting to the CTO, the R&D Manager acts as the key link between strategic R&D direction and practical laboratory execution. A central responsibility is translating technical priorities and guidance from the CTO into structured research activities and clear direction for the R&D team.

The role requires a hands-on leader who actively participates in scientific work while leading and developing the team. The R&D Manager organizes and prioritizes the team’s work to ensure strong momentum in research projects and alignment with Thor Medical’s R&D strategy.

Close collaboration across the organization is essential. The R&D Manager works closely with the CTO on scientific direction and R&D priorities to ensure that the strategic goals of Thor Medical can be reached. The R&D Manager also partners with the Plant Manager at Herøya as a key peer to ensure collaboration with the operational team on alignment between R&D activities, process development, and production.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, support, and develop the R&D team at Herøya, ensuring alignment with Thor Medical’s technology goals.

  • Setting up project mandates in cooperation with CTO.

  • Lead, prioritize, and monitor R&D projects to maintain progress and deliver results.

  • Translate CTO guidance into daily R&D activities and clear direction for the team.

  • Design, execute, and analyze research in radiochemistry, inorganic chemistry, and analytical chemistry, producing reports to support decision-making.

  • Participate hands-on in scientific work to ensure project momentum and quality outcomes.

  • Maintain a safe, compliant, and operational R&D laboratory environment.

  • Collaborate closely with the CTO, Plant Manager, operations, and cross-functional teams to integrate research into scalable, operational solutions.

  • Contribute to innovation, problem-solving, and continuous improvement across the organization.

  • Stay current on scientific advancements to enhance methods, accuracy, and efficiency.

Qualifications and Competencies
  • Proven track record in leading and building scientific teams.

  • MSc or PhD in chemistry (radiochemistry, inorganic, or analytical chemistry)

  • Experience in project design and management, including budget

  • Experience in translating strategic priorities into actionable R&D plans and guiding team execution.

  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and foster collaboration across R&D, operations, and other functions.

  • Hands-on experience in designing and executing experiments and research projects in radiochemistry, inorganic, and analytical chemistry.

  • Proficiency with analytical techniques such as chromatography, ICP-MS, HPGe, and other relevant methods.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and practical laboratory expertise.

  • Knowledge of radiation safety and safe handling of radioactive materials.

  • Experience in laboratory management, maintaining an operational and compliant research environment is an advantage

  • Excellent communication, delegation, and reporting skills.
