About the position
Are you excited by the possibilities to promote human, animal and environmental health by furthering our understanding of host microbiota interactions? And are you intrigued by how soft materials can provide strong defenses? The Department of Biotechnology and Food Science (IBT) has a vacancy for a 100% position as a PhD candidate working on a interdisciplinary project within the field of mucosa – microbiota interactions across the Biopolymer and Biomaterials (Biopolymers and Biomaterials - NTNU), and Microbial Biotechnology (Microbial Biotechnology - NTNU) research groups. Your main supervisor will be Associate Professor Catherine Taylor Nordgård, and your co-supervisor will be Professor Ingrid Bakke.
As a PhD Candidate with us, you will work to achieve your doctorate, and at the same time gain valuable experience that qualifies you for a further career in higher education and research, in and outside academia.
Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department.
About the project
The mucosal surface is a universal dynamic interface between higher organisms and the external environment, and the importance of microbes for both mucosal health and wider functioning of higher organisms is becoming clearer and clearer. The project will utilize our established gnotobiotic experimental system for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and our biopolymer and biomaterial research laboratory to study the dynamic bacteria-mucus interplay, investigating how microbial exposure influences the biomechanical functional properties of the mucus layer at the host environment boundary.
Duties of the position
- Complete the doctoral education until obtaining a doctorate
- Conduct high-quality research within the project framework described above
- Participate actively and collaborate within the research group(s)
- Communicate the research through academic publications, popular science dissemination and national/international conferences
- If applicable, participate in teaching, research exchange, workshops or other training activities
Be prepared for changes to your work duties after employment.
Required selection criteria
- You must have a relevant Master's degree in biotechnology or a related area that includes practical laboratory experience in microbiology and biochemistry/chemistry or similar. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level. Master students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position and no later than 31.12.2025.
- You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
