**Job Title:**Chief Engineer

**Reports to:**Master

Reporting to the position: 2nd Engineer, 3rd Engineer, ETO, Motorman/Oiler, Engine Cadet, Engine Apprentice

**Substitute:**2nd Engineer

Role Purpose

The Chief Engineer leads the Engine Department and is responsible for the safe, efficient and compliant operation and maintenance of all vessel machinery, including systems related to lifesaving appliances and the mooring launch.

Responsibility and accountability:

• Overall responsibility for safe and efficient operation of all engines, machinery and technical systems
• Lead and manage the Engine Department, including planning, staffing, training and daily operations
• Ensure compliance with HSE rules, environmental procedures and relevant commercial requirements
• Maintain PMS, engine logs, technical documentation and follow‑up of inspections
• Oversee bunkering, discharges, and technical reporting
• Cost control, budgeting input and management of spare parts and technical purchases
• Ensure emergency preparedness, fire prevention and correct use of PPE
• Follow up work/rest hours and promote high standards of housekeeping and safety
• Train and develop 2nd Engineers, cadets and apprentices, support onboarding of new personnel
• Report non‑conformities, near misses and observations according to company policies
• Ensure all certificates, documentation and SMS requirements are up to date

Qualifications

• Valid certificate to serve as Chief Engineer on the relevant vessel
• Required certificates and training in accordance with STCW, industry standards, and company training matrices
• Assessor training (certificate required for NIS)
• Solid experience from offshore operations is an advantage
