Two researcher positions at the Oslo Centre for Biostatistics and Epidemiology (full-time permanent positions)

Regional Research Support (FST) is part of the Oslo Hospital Services division at Oslo University Hospital (OUH). The unit delivers services and advice to research groups and employees at OUH and other hospitals that are part of the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority (HSØ). FST consists of 5 departments: Administrative Research Support, Oslo Center for Biostatistics & Epidemiology, Clinical Trial Unit, Registry Support and Research Applications and Comparative Medicine.

Oslo Center for Biostatistics and Epidemiology (OCBE) is a joint department of OUH and the University of Oslo (UiO). It is one of Europe's most active groups in the field of biostatistics and epidemiology, and is currently a group of over 70 researchers. OCBE’s research is internationally recognized, in particular in the areas of time-to-event models and causal inference; epidemiology of lifestyle, chronic diseases and infectious diseases; methods for high-dimensional models and data integration; mathematical modelling of cancer; probabilistic modelling and Bayesian inference, stochastic algorithms and simulation-based inference; and statistical machine learning. OCBE collaborates with numerous leading bio-medical research groups in Norway and internationally. OCBE has acquired major research funding from both national, nordic and European agencies. OCBE has a leading role in the Centre of Excellence Integreat. In addition to research, OCBE provides an extensive advisory service to biomedical researchers at UiO, OUH and other hospitals in HSØ. OCBE is also responsible for the teaching of biostatistical subjects in the professional studies in medicine, in the PhD training program at the Medical Faculty at UiO and further education of research staff at OUH and HSØ.

Evaluation of the application
In assessing applications, particular emphasis will be placed upon the academic and personal abilities of the candidate and the applicant’s personal motivation for this position. Interviews with selected candidates will be arranged via video conference or (preferably) in person.
 
The application must include: 

- Application letter with a personal motivation for this position, including a statement about past and present research, plans for future research, specific motivation for epidemiological/statistical advising and collaboration with bio-medical researchers, and other relevant interests and experiences (max 2 pages)
- CV (summarizing education, positions, academic and professional work, teaching/advising and other relevant activities)
- A list of all scientific publications, and a brief description of the five most important ones, incl. the candidate’s contributions and why they are important for the candidate
- Names and contact details for at least three references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and telephone number)
- Be written in English or in Norwegian

Duties and Responsibilities

For the present positions, we are seeking two biostatisticians and/or epidemiologists for full-time permanent positions as Researchers at OCBE. The working time is equally distributed between OCBE’s advisory service through epidemiological and statistical advising, and self-initiated and collaborative research projects, with some time (up to 10%) for administrative work. One of the positions is in collaboration with Vestre Viken Hospital Trust, which will involve weekly visits to the hospitals in Bærum and Drammen. For the other position, occasional trips to hospitals in HSØ can be expected.
 
The candidate will work towards becoming a leading, independent biostatistician and/or epidemiologist, in an international perspective, developing new methods and/or novel application of methods in biostatistics and/or epidemiology, and aiming to build their own research group. The interest, potential and capacity to obtain research funding is important for these positions. We are seeking candidates with research interests and expertise that are complementary to existing expertise at OCBE, who will collaborate with colleagues to strengthen OCBE’s research environment. In particular, we are looking for candidates who are interested in working with randomized controlled trials including methodology for modern clinical trials, e.g. pragmatic trials and platform trials, and/or statistical machine learning for medical research, but other interests are also welcome.
 
Regarding statistical advising, knowledge in a broad spectrum of biomedical research areas and in a wide range of biostatistical topics is warranted. We are seeking candidates that have competence in common topics like repeated measures/mixed models, regression and survival analysis, and missing data. In addition, experience with clinical trials is an advantage.

Qualifications and requirements

• PhD in biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology, mathematics, computer science or equivalent with a documented knowledge of statistics beyond basic level
• Strong interest for and experience in the application of statistical methods in biomedical research, including basic medical research, clinical medicine, epidemiology and/or public health, including experience with individual-level patient data
• Experience with clinical trials is an advantage
• Excellent skills in statistical programming in R, Stata, or other comparable programming languages
• Commitment and experience working collaboratively and effectively, including with researchers from other disciplines
• Experience in epidemiological/ statistical advising to clinicians is desired
• Good communication skills and fluency in English (written and oral) are required. English is the working language at OCBE. Applicants, who are not competent in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish, must acquire such competence within three years subsequent to their appointment
