At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care, a full-time PhD-position is available for a period of three (3) years. The candidate will be affiliated with the Section for Ethics and Health Economics (ETØK). The position is part of the project “Strengthening health and disease modelling for public health decision making”, funded by the Wellcome Trust. The project is being implemented by Consortium of five (5) universities in Tanzania, Kenya, Norway and the UK from 2025 to 2029.
About the project/work tasks:
- Develop data collection tools for costing and economic evaluations for use in targeted countries including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Mali etc.
- Oversee the collection of cost data related to malaria intervention from the provider and household perspectives in selected countries
- Develop dynamic Markov models for economic evaluations and budget impact analyses
- Analyze the collected data and write manuscripts and publish economic evaluations on costs, cost-effectiveness, budget impact and equity impact in international peer reviewed journals
- Disseminate findings in conferences, seminars and other forums
- Participate in meetings and other activities being undertaken by the consortium. Interest and capacity to undertake international travels is a requirement for the position.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- The applicant must hold a master's degree or equivalent in the field of Health Economics, Economics or any other degree with major in health economics. Specialisation in methods of economic evaluation is an advantage.
- Experience from relevant research projects in malaria and mathematical modeling of diseases will be considered as positive
- Understanding of East African health systems is an advantage
- The candidate should demonstrate the ability to work independently and in a structured manner, while also being capable of effective collaboration with others
- The applicant must exhibit both the ability and motivation to undertake a PhD project, under the rules and regulations of the University of Bergen. The candidate needs to be based in Bergen for the duration of the project.

Organized research training (PhD program):The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. Admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the faculty is essential for this position. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.
The PhD-position:PhD-positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region.

- Salary NOK 570 000 (code 1017) in the state salary scale. For applicants with at least one year of employment in a position as a General Practitioner or Dentist, salary NOK 585 000. For applicants who are licensed as medical doctors or dentists, documentation of Norwegian authorization must be submitted with the application. Medical specialist starts on salary NOK 605 000. For applicants with specialist training, a certificate of specialist approval from the Norwegian Directorate of Health must also be included.
