About the position
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has an open position as Researcher. The position is affiliated with the Ocean and Ice Division, Research and Development Department in Oslo.
The Ocean and Ice Division develops and operates numerical models for forecasting of ocean currents, hydrography, sea level, waves and sea-ice.
These models provide input to downstream services such as oil spill drift models and search-and-rescue support. The work is carried out in collaboration with national and international partners.
Work tasks
The work is related to the development and maintenance of operational forecasting systems for coupled sea-ice and ocean circulation, including the associated data assimilation systems.
The work involves exploiting remote sensing data for assimilation and verification, with particular emphasis on HF radars and satellite altimetry, and specific focus on the coastal ocean dynamics. The work involves the development and maintenance of operational codes and requires excellent technical skills.
It also requires the ability to work within an inter-institutional collaboration, and it is essential that you can work efficiently in a team environment.
Qualifications
- PhD in geophysical/physical sciences, with emphasis on remote sensing techniques and/or physical oceanography.
- Experience in scientific programming within a Linux environment (Fortran, Python, Git).
- Experience with numerical ocean/sea-ice models.
- Experience with high performance computing and scheduling software.
- Experience with ensemble prediction systems is beneficial.
- Experience with HF radar observations and/or satellite altimetry observations is beneficial.
- The working language at MET Norway is Norwegian. Foreign candidates must be willing to learn basic Norwegian.
- Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and demonstrate fluency, written and oral.
We can offer
- Annual salary on the government salary scale, 545.400-625.000 Norwegian kroner, depending on qualifications and experience. Higher salary can be negotiated in case the selected applicant has excellent qualifications.
