About the position

The Department of Material Science and Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology has vacancy for a 3-year PhD candidate position within the area of carbon capture and energy efficiency for metallurgical processes. The PhD candidate will be part of the FME ZeMe centre where both the university, SINTEF, NORCE and the Norwegian industry are partners.  

The PhD candidate reports to Prof. Gabriella Tranell.

About the project

Candidates with strong interest in metallurgical processes holding MSc degree in materials science are invited to apply. The PhD candidate will be a part of a research group of about 25 PhD candidates and Postdocs. The PhD candidate will also work closely with research institutions like SINTEF and the Norwegian industry. The candidate will investigate how carbon capture can be implemented in the Si/FeSi ferroalloys production and combined with new and existing energy recovery systems

Duties of the position

In the Norwegian PhD degree 4 courses must be passed in addition to the research work. The research work will be both experimental and modelling-based, including literature review, writing of papers and the final PhD thesis.

Required selection criteria

• You must have an educationally relevant background and work experience in material science, energy efficiency/recovery and modelling of high temperature gas systems.
• Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
• You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
• You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program 
• You must have a background in high temperature metal production.
• You must have experience in experimental high temperature work.
• Good written and oral skills in both a Scandinavian language and English is compulsory.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations for the Universities and Colleges Act (university and colleges regulations) and Regulations for the degrees philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) and philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) in artistic development work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) for general criteria for the position.

Salary and conditions

In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK  536 200,-  per annum. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary. 

The employment period is 3 years. If learning Norwegian (level A2 corresponding to at least 15 credits) is to be completed before the end of the employment period, the employment period can be extended by 10 weeks after completed and documented the Norwegian course.

For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in Materials Science and Engineering (https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phmt) within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme throughout the period of employment.

The position is conditional on external funding.

As an employee at NTNU, it is important that you keep yourself up to date with academic and organizational changes and adapt to them.

For the necessary academic and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.

The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the State Employees Act, and Export control (legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services). Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, are considered to bein conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to be employed.
