About the position

The Norwegian Research Centre for Renewal of Hydropower Technology, RenewHydro, has a vacancy for a PhD Candidate at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering with the Materials & Manufacturing research group. 

Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department. You will be supervised by Associate Professor Nima Razavi and co-supervised by Professor Ole Gunnar Dahlhaug.


About the project

Hydropower plants are increasingly operated in a flexible manner to balance variable renewable energy production. This results in complex variable-amplitude loading histories in Francis turbine runners, including start–stop cycles, rapid load changes, dwell periods and mixed high–low stress sequences. Such loading conditions influence fatigue damage development in critical blade regions.

The objective of this PhD project is to establish a mechanistically based understanding of how realistic operational loading drives fatigue initiation, cumulative damage and crack evolution in modern and vintage Francis turbine runner steels. The work combines systematic experimental fatigue testing under representative variable-amplitude loading with local fatigue modelling and fracture-mechanics-based crack growth analysis.

The candidate will investigate load-sequence effects, small-crack behaviour and the transition from stable to critical crack growth. Comparative testing of contemporary and vintage runner materials will be performed to assess the influence of ageing, microstructural variability and service history. A purpose-designed model specimen will be developed to reproduce representative multiaxial stress states relevant for runner blades, thereby bridging material-level testing and component-level behaviour.

The resulting material parameters and modelling approaches will be formulated for integration into a turbine-scale simulation framework developed in a parallel PhD project within RenewHydro.

This position is financed through the Research Council of Norway and the Norwegian hydropower industry as part of the Norwegian Research Centre for Renewal of Hydropower Technology (RenewHydro), hosted by NTNU in Trondheim, Norway, in collaboration with leading hydropower producers and technology suppliers. 


Duties of the position

  • Complete the doctoral education until obtaining a doctorate
  • Carry out research of good quality within the framework described above
  • Academic publications and popular science dissemination
  • Participate in the research group for Materials & Manufacturing
  • Participate in international activities such as conferences and/or research stays at foreign educational institutions

Required selection criteria

  • You must have a relevant Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Engineering, Solid Mechanics or equivalent. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level. Master students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position.
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you maybe considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's Doctoral Programme
  • You must have an academically relevant background within mechanics of materials, solid mechanics or fatigue and fracture mechanics
  • Documented strong background in experimental mechanics, solid mechanics, and mechanics of materials
  • Experience from numerical simulations, preferably finite element analysis
  • Excellent written presentation skills and oral English language skill

The appointment is to be made in accordance with NTNUs guidelines for recruitment positions and Regulations for the degrees philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) and philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) in artistic development work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)for general criteria for the position.


Preferred selection criteria

  • Good knowledge and experience in mechanical testing of materials or components
  • Good understanding of fatigue and fracture mechanics
  • Experience in using Finite Element Codes such as ABAQUS, ANSYS, etc. for numerical analysis of fatigue and fracture mechanics
  • Knowledge of basic turbomachinery principles
  • Oral and written proficiency in Norwegian/Scandinavian languages

Salary and conditions

In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 550 800,-per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary. 

The employment period is 3 years.

For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in Engineering within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme through out the period of employment.

The position is conditional on external funding from the Research Council of Norway as part of the RenewHydro center.

As an employee at NTNU, it is important that you keep yourself up to date with academic and organizational changes and adapt to them.

For the necessary professional and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.

The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the State Employees Act, and Export control (legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services).
