About the position
NHH in Bergen, Norway, invites applications for a position as Associate Professor in Business Economics with specialisation in Applied Statistics at the Department of Business and Management Science.
The Department of Business and Management Science has high ambitions in terms of research and offers a stimulating work environment. The department delivers teaching and supervision in NHH’s programs at the bachelor’s, master’s and PhD levels, as well as executive programs. The main activities are organised in five broad research areas: i) Managerial Economics and Business Strategy ii) Business Taxation iii) Asset Management and Risk Analysis iv) Energy Markets, Resource Management and Sustainability v) Shipping, Logistics and Operations Management. The department is multi-disciplinary, and the research covers both empirical and theoretical inquiries. For more information, please consult our webpage.
The department needs to strengthen its capacity in applied statistics and seeks ambitious candidates early in their careers who can document relevant research and teaching capabilities. The position will be associated with the research area Asset Management and Risk Analysis.
NHH has recently developed new programmes with an emphasis on business analytics and programming both at the master and bachelor level. The department’s portfolio of courses in this area is therefore growing. The department is also partner in several large, technology oriented research projects that focus on green industry innovation and sustainability, such as Climate Futures.
Candidates should have a research interest in topics such as statistical modelling, prediction, risk management, insurance and climate risk. Candidates should also have a background that is suitable for supervising business research that applies statistical methods.
The candidate must be able to teach courses such as TECH3 “Applied statistics”, BAN404 “Statistical learning” and BAN430 “Forecasting”, as well as to develop new courses in areas such as statistics, data science, machine learning and risk analysis.
The department has long-term teaching obligations in NHH’s bachelor program in economics and business administration. The candidate should therefore also be able to teach the courses MET1 “Mathematics for economists”, MET2 “Statistics for economists”, and MET4 “Empirical methods”. The courses MET1, MET2 and MET4 are all taught in Norwegian. Proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language will therefore be strongly emphasised.
Teaching quality and the ability to engage large classes is also an important criterion. This will be evaluated through documented evidence of previous teaching experience in a recognised academic program, interaction with students, and student evaluations.
The position involves teaching on average two courses per year as well as some graduate supervision. Candidates who cannot document at least 200 hours of pedagogical coursework when hired, must complete the NHH program on basic pedagogical competence within two years.
Applicants must have a PhD degree from a recognised business school or university and must demonstrate high quality in research. International experience will be weighted positively. Research quality will be evaluated based on publications in well-recognised international journals, as well as research potential demonstrated through a pipeline of working papers.
For permanent employment at NHH, candidates are normally required to have published at least two scientific articles in the last five years, with at least one appearing in a journal ranked at Level 3 or higher in the Academic Journal Guide (AJG), or at Level 2 in the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals. For candidates who are near the margin of the minimum criteria, an active research program with clear potential for future publications in top academic journals is expected.
NHH is a one campus business school, and the place of work is Bergen. The candidate appointed to the position is expected to interact and cooperate on research with colleagues, attend faculty seminars, take part in recruitment processes, and other activities that aim to strengthen the research and social environment at NHH and the department.
NHH needs to improve its gender balance. In the event of equivalent qualifications, female applicants will be given preference.
NHH offers
- a competitive salary that is negotiable within the state salary scale. The salary will depend both on the level of competence and length of service. External research grants and teaching in executive programs may offer exceptional candidates opportunities for supplementing the base salary
- a favorable membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (SPK) and good welfare benefits such as parental leave
- research funds for traveling and conference participation and a bonus system for publication in top international journals (up to NOK 200 000)
- opportunity to apply for research leave. The period of entitlement for six months’ research leave is six semesters and 12 semesters for a year's leave. Female associate professors can earn the first two years of research leave in half the normal time, and they can receive an annual NOK 35 000 top-up research grant during their first three years of service at NHH
Note that health care, schools, and most other public services are free in Norway. The city of Bergen has a mild, coastal climate and offers rich opportunities for culture and outdoor activities - as well as a family-friendly environment (explore visitnorway.com).
