Om stillingen

The Department of Electric Energy (IEL) at NTNU invites applications for a 100% permanent Associate Professor position within the Electricity Markets and Energy System Planning (EMESP) research group. The position has a strong thematic focus on electricity market design, flexibility utilisation, and market–grid simulation and optimisation, supporting the transition to sustainable and highly electrified energy systems.

The ongoing energy transition is fundamentally reshaping electricity systems through high shares of variable renewable energy, electrification of transport and industry, distributed energy resources, and increasing system uncertainty. These developments require new market designs and analytical frameworks that can efficiently mobilise flexibility across time horizons and coordinate market outcomes with grid constraints. Novel computational and modelling frameworks are therefore required to analyse and support this evolution.

The position is particularly suited for candidates with a research profile aligned with quantitative market analysis, flexibility valuation, and optimisation-based market and grid simulations, including long-term and short-term decision-making in electricity markets. The successful candidate is expected to strengthen NTNU’s leading role in market-based approaches to system flexibility, in close collaboration with industry, system operators, and international research partners.

Your immediate line manager will be the Head of the research group.

Duties of the position

Research
• Conduct internationally recognised research in electricity market operations and flexibility utilisation, with a strong emphasis on quantitative optimisation and programming-based analysis of future energy systems.
• Develop and apply optimisation and simulation models for analysing electricity markets, including long-term planning models, short-term market clearing, and valuation of flexible resources.
• Initiate and lead externally funded research projects in collaboration with industry, TSOs/DSOs, regulatory authorities, and national and international research partners.

Teaching
• Teach and further develop courses at bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD level in areas such as:
• Electricity market analysis
• Flexibility markets and congestion management
• Optimisation methods for energy markets
• Contribute to pedagogical development and innovative teaching methods, including modelling- and coding-based learning.

Supervision and academic service
• Supervise and co-supervise bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD students.
• Participate in PhD committees, scientific committees, and other academic service tasks at the Department and Faculty.
• Contribute to dissemination of research results to industry, policymakers, and the broader public.

Study programme Leadership
Contribute to the development and leadership of the Norwegian Study Programme Master’s in Energy and the Environment, ensuring high-quality academic delivery, curriculum development, coordination of educational activities, and continuous improvement aligned with departmental and faculty strategies.

Interdisciplinary collaboration within IEL and across NTNU is strongly encouraged.
