About the position
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET) seeks a remote sensing researcher. The place of work will be Oslo or Tromsø.
MET is monitoring and forecasting weather, ocean, sea ice, air quality and climate. Results are disseminated to various users through a wide range of information and data dissemination systems, nationally, regionally or globally. Throughout the history of the institute, a main focus has been transformation of research into operational services. Much of the development is done through active collaboration with other national and international institutions. A large part of the work is externally funded.
The position is related to development and implementation of near real time and climate consistent products based on passive microwave sensors in an ongoing European project on remote sensing of sea ice. Tasks include, in addition to algorithm implementation, the planning, development, implementation and documentation of production systems, both in test and operational environments. This includes knowledge on documentation and publication of datasets, visualization of data and guidance to users. The work requires good technical and scientific qualifications, and is often done in international cooperation.
The position is for 2 years.
Qualifications
Required qualifications- Higher education in geophysics, physics, applied mathematics or equivalent
- Experience and knowledge with use of satellite remote sensing data
- Experience and documented knowledge in applied mathematical / scientific programming in Linux environment, including experience with Bash, Python and version control
- Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and demonstrate fluency, written and oral
- Foreign candidates must be willing to learn basic Norwegian
- Experience with passive microwave remote sensing techniques
- Experience with High Performance Computing environments
- Experience with remote sensing file formats like CF-NetCDF, SAFE and Zarr
- Experience with operational systems
- Excellent collaboration skills and ability to work independently
- Structured, curious and innovative
- Ability to develop modular, flexible and robust software solutions
- Enjoys working in groups as well as individually
- Ability to define own work tasks in the balance between quality and efficiency (understand what is good enough delivery according to the task)

- The position is paid in accordance with the main tariff agreements in the state as 1108 researcher, according to qualifications. Salary range NOK 540 000 - NOK 680 000. Higher wages may be considered for particularly qualified persons. A 2% statutory contribution to the Statens Pensjonskasse is deducted from the salary.
- 6 months of mutual probation period.
