IFE’s Department for Battery Technology is seeking a highly motivated and innovative Research Engineer to support cutting-edge research in battery materials and energy systems. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to technological advancements in national and EU-level projects and play a meaningful role in Norway’s green transition.
Our department is equipped with a wide range of advanced laboratory infrastructure—from material synthesis and characterisation tools to small-scale pouch cell production lines and full-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). The operation, improvement, and maintenance of this infrastructure are essential to our ability to support industry and drive technical innovation. We are seeking for one full-time, temporary position (fixed term until October 2026.
Key Responsibilities
- Modifying and optimising battery materials through techniques such as coating, milling, spray drying, and other processing methods.
- Initiating and monitoring pouch cell testing activities.
- Maintaining and improving laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
- Operating reactors for materials production.
- Designing and building custom devices for specialised experimental setups.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or equivalent) in chemical or mechanical engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics, or a related field. Relevant work experience may substitute for formal education.
- A strong experimental mindset: ability to plan and execute experiments, analyse results, draw conclusions, and propose improvements.
- A collaborative and team-oriented approach.
- Intellectual curiosity, creativity, and a proactive attitude.
- Self-driven with a structured and reliable work ethic.
- A hands-on, solution-oriented mindset with a “let’s try” attitude.
Experience in one or more of the following areas will be considered an advantage:
- Synthesis and processing of materials.Understanding of battery materials and operating principles.
- Practical experience in laboratory or production environments.
- Proficiency in Python for data analysis or automation.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required.
