The Department of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering (IHB) aims to bridge education and research with practical field applications, actively involving industry in our educational and research activities. The department conducts education and research in technology areas such as renewable energy, construction engineering, ship design, mechatronics, navigation, and shipping. It currently employs approximately 100 staff embers.
The position is part of the Maritime Technology research group.

About the position

The Department of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering (IHB) has a permanent full-time (100%) position available as an Associate Professor in Maritime Energy Systems. The position is linked to the bachelor's program in Renewable Energy in Ålesund. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching and conducting research in maritime energy systems, which are crucial for Norway's green energy transition. Teaching responsibilities include nuclear systems, thermofluid systems, machinery system design and simulation, as well as supervising students in practical maritime engineering disciplines and laboratory work.

The desired research focus areas include energy systems for low- and zero-emission  maritime solutions, with an emphasis on system design and simulation. We are particularly interested in nuclear power systems and integrating new methods for multiphysics simulation to optimize performance by combining different types of machinery and energy conversion technologies.

The department aims to bridge education and research with practical field applications, actively involving industry in our educational and research activities. The position is located in Ålesund.

Your immediate leader is Head of Department.


Duties of the position

  • The department has been awarded a major research project, SFI Sustainable and Industrialised Nuclear Technology (SFI SAINT). This is an eight-year project aimed at industrialising nuclear energy for maritime applications. The position will play a key role in this research, particularly in relation to simulations of nuclear reactors, and multiphysics simulations of thermohydraulic systems.
  • Develop an independent technical research program in an area related to the position.
  • Supervise and train bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD students, as well as postdoctoral researchers.
  • Lead or contribute to teaching at the bachelor’s, master’s, and/or PhD level, while serving as a role model for students in practical engineering work.
  • Engage in academic communities and disseminate research results through publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Secure national and international external funding to support research activities.
  • Build networks with industry and strengthen NTNU Ålesund’s position as a partner for industry.

Required qualifications 

Associate professor:

You must have the following qualifications required for the position of associate professor:

  • a doctoral degree in energy systems, or competence at an equivalent level documented either by scientific work or artistic work of the same scope and quality,
  • Demonstrated competence in:
    • Multiphysics modelling and simulation
    • Nuclear system simulation
  • Excellent written and oral English language skills
  • Documented educational competence

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the NTNUs guidelines for academic positions. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.

New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level B2of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU. 


Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in modelling and simulation of hybrid energy systems
  • Experience with multiphysics modelling and the use of MOOSE software for nuclear engineering
  • Experience in system design, operation, maintenance, and modelling of ship
  • machinery and energy systems, including thermofluid, hydraulic, and electrical systems
  • An established network in academia and industry, particularly relevant to NTNU
  • Oral and written proficiency in a Scandinavian language

Personal qualities

  • Strong pedagogical skills
  • Proactive, with the ability to identify and pursue opportunities
  • Able to engage, motivate, and inspire studentsexample

Emphasis will be placed on personal and interpersonal qualities.

Salary and conditions

As a Associate Professor (code 1011) you are normally paid from gross750 000 NOK – 900 000 NOK per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance withthe regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.  

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

For the necessary professional and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.

It is important that you both document and reflect on your competence. You are encouraged to use the NTNUs competence matrix as a guide for  documentation of your competence.

Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Our assessment of the pedagogical skills will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration, and an open scientific practice will be recognized.

NTNU is obliged by the evaluation criteria for research quality in accordance with The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment – DORA and the obligations in the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment ( CoARA) on responsible assessment of research and recognition of a wider range of academic contributions to science and society. This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date. We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.
