About the position

The Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, Nord University, Norway, invites applications for a three‑year 20% position as Professor or Associate Professor in Marine Ecology.

The position is based at the Bodø campus. As Nord University operates across multiple campuses, collaboration between faculties regardless of location is essential. The role may also include responsibilities at other Nord University campuses. 


Duties and responsibilities

  • The position entails teaching and supervision at all levels.
  • Supervision of Masters and PhD students in marine ecology, with special emphasis on species distribution modelling, macroecology, and machine-learning approaches to assess biodiversity responses to past, present, and future climate change.
  • Initiating and developing interdisciplinary research projects.
  • Facilitation of research projects with national and international partners.
  • Participation in the development of externally funded research projects will be expected, as well as furthering research collaborations with national and international partners.
  • It is assumed that the appointee will have excellent communications skills to advance the objectives of the Faculty and contribute to the development of its academic community. In this capacity the appointee will act as a marine ecology advisor, engaging with the Faculty's research community, and preparing personalized courses for graduate students and early career researchers.

Qualification requirements

 Professor:
  • a doctoral degree in a relevant subject area, or competence at an equivalent level documented either by scientific work or artistic work of the same scope and quality
  • educational competence
  • significant contributions to research or artistic development work at the highest level, in accordance with international or national standards in the field
  • quality development in own teaching and supervision over time and a high degree of reflection on own practice
  • broad experience with supervision, preferably at master's/PhD level
  • initiate, lead and/or participate in the development of educational quality in the academic communities
  • good oral and written presentation skills in English 

     

Associate Professor:

To meet the qualification requirements for “førsteamanuensis” (uh. regulations § 3-6) a minimum of the following is required:

  • a doctoral degree in a relevant subject area, or competence at an equivalent level documented either by scientific work or artistic work of the same scope and quality
  • educational competence
  • good oral and written presentation skills in English 

 

Educational competence means pedagogical or didactic competence to promote learning, including knowledge and skills in the development and implementation of teaching and supervision at university and university college level. Nord University has supplementary provisions on educational competence. For further information please refer to NORDs requirements for educational competence 

Any applicants who are unable to provide documentary proof of adequate professional educational competence when employed must acquire such competence over the course of a two-year period. Nord University offers such a course which covers this requirement.


Qualified applicants will be ranked according to the following criteria:

  • Research and development with relevance to the position
  • Emphasis will be placed on publications within the last five years
  • Experience with international research networks and projects with external funding
  • Experience from teaching and academic supervision at bachelor-, master- and doctoral- levels from the university and college sector
  • Educational qualifications from a college, university or equivalent
  • Pedagogical skills
  • Relevant professional practice
  • Good skills in communication and collaboration with students, colleagues
  • Individual qualities that can contribute positively to the workplace environment
  • Good oral and written presentation skills in English

The position is compensated according to government regulations, LPL 17.510, code 1013 Professor or code 1011 Associate Professor. Salary by agreement.

  • Copies of diplomas, transcripts and certificates
  • Complete copies of up to 10 or 15 of the applicant's most relevant publications / academic works that the applicant wishes to be considered, along with a list of those submitted. The list should include five publications that the applicant believes to be most important, along with the reasons why. The doctoral dissertation should be included
  • Pedagogical CV 
  • Documentation of other activities which the applicant considers relevant to the position and desires to be considered in the assessment
  • Contact information for 2-3 referees
