We are seeking a motivated and talented candidate for a three-year PhD position focused on developing methods, algorithms, and frameworks for advanced coordination of multiple distributed assets in infrastructures similar to microgrids. This PhD project will focus on creating reliable and resilient ways to operate distributed energy systems, even when conditions are uncertain. It explores both off-grid (islanded) and grid-connected solutions. The research aims to develop innovative solutions for coordinating energy systems, making future power networks more flexible, robust, and ready to meet diverse needs.
The candidate will be employed by IFE and must apply for admission to the PhD program at the University of Oslo (UiO). The candidate will be supervised by a joint team from IFE and UiO. The research will center on novel scientific work based on simulation and modelling relevant research problems and cases that can be scaled to real-world applications. The candidate will also have access to relevant laboratories and infrastructure at IFE, including real-time data from IFE's PV installations
Duties and responsibilities
The project will tackle key challenges such as:
- Incorporating uncertainty and dynamics from distributed production sources and energy storage solutions in coordinated systems.
- Develop and test models for data driven control and model predictive control
- Developing methods for coordination behind-the-meter and with the overlying grid that can be scaled and utilized for both smaller systems and larger grid areas.
- Modeling and analyzing system impact to ensure reliable operation with a strong focus on resilience.
The findings will advance the design and operation of microgrid infrastructures and provide scalable frameworks for broader applications in distributed energy systems.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in electrical engineering, energy systems, control engineering, computer science, or a closely related field.
- Strong background in control systems, optimization, and dynamic modeling.
- Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Self-driven with initiative
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with microgrid systems, distributed energy resources integration, and energy storage technologies.
- Familiarity with real-time control and optimization algorithms.
- Programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB, Julia, or similar).
- Knowledge of power system operation and resilience analysis.
- Interest in experimental validation and scalable solutions.
- Understanding of Norwegian language is an advantage but not required.
Grade requirements
The norm is as follows: the average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system the average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system the Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system Fluent oral and written communication skills in English English requirements for applicants from outside of EU/ EEA countries and exemptions from the requirements: https://www.mn.uio.no/english/research/phd/regulations/regulations.html#toc8
The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD programme must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position. For more information see: http://www.uio.no/english/research/phd/ or http://www.mn.uio.no/english/research/phd/
