We are looking for a Research Assistant who can contribute to various research projects related to maritime interaction design at the Department of Design.
Department of Design at NTNU hosts the Shore Control Lab, a multidisciplinary research lab with designers and human factors specialists who are passionate about making maritime technology compatible with human needs. Our research revolves around three core themes: situational awareness, safety, and usability. Our mission is to enhance all three using applied research methodologies in collaboration with other fields such as electronics, marine technology, engineering cybernetics and computer science.
The Department of Design has currently a 2 year vacancy for a Research Assistant, who will conduct user studies, design user interfaces and prototypes, and collect and analyze research data in related to the maritime domain. This position is an opportunity to learn more about design research and to gain competence and experience to qualify for a PhD position.
The position’s working place is at NTNU campus in Trondheim at the Shore Control Lab.
Your immediate leader is the Head of Department.
Duties of the position
- Conduct user studies and design and develop prototype user interfaces
- Collect and analyze data from various field studies and experiments
- Collaborate with the partners in projects in the NTNU Shore Control Labor at the Department of Design.
- Participate in internal project meetings and report the research results in scientific conferences and journals.
- Participating in supervising students.
Required selection criteria
You must:
- Have a master's degree in design, interaction design, industrial design, human factors, computer and information technology, informaticsor equivalent education. Students who are graduating summer 2025 can apply.
- Have very good written and oral English language skills. Candidates from universities outside Scandinavia and English-speaking countries are requested to document English language proficiency:
- TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
- IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5
- CAE/CPE: grade B or A
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, Post Doctor and Research Assistant.
The position as Research Assistant should give you the opportunity to gain insight into scientific or artistic work and method. The assignments are at an academic level and must consist of scientific or artistic assistance.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.
Preferred selection criteria
- Experience with human-centered design and interaction design
- Experience with implementing high-fidelity user interface prototypes
- Experience with usability evaluations
- Experience with information visualization
- Very good written and oral English and Norwegian language skills

Salary and conditions
Research Assistants are remunerated in code 1019 and 1020 depending on competence. They are normally remunerated in code 1019 at gross from NOK 417.300.- per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. Code 1020 is normally remunerated at gross from NOK 452.300.- per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
