The Section for Immunology is seeking a dedicated and innovative researcher for a permanent position. In broad terms, we conduct laboratory-based studies to understand how the immune system responds to infections, vaccines and environmental exposures, to improve preventive interventions, and with the ultimate goal of reducing overall disease burden.

We are seeking a candidate that will further strengthen our focus on high-dimensional cellular analyses (CyTOF, flow cytometry), other omics approaches, and systems immunology to uncover mechanisms and predictors of immune response heterogeneity, and consequences for health outcomes. Our overarching research topics include immunity, vaccine effectiveness, and short- and long-term effects of infection and vaccination, including post-infectious sequelae (e.g. long COVID) and adverse events from vaccination, to identify risk groups for severe infections and reduced vaccine effect. The overall goal is to enable better, targeted interventions for disease prevention.

We also serve as a scientific collaborator and methodological resource for FHI as a core facility specializing in high-dimensional single-cell analysis, where we study the impact of altered immune cell profiles in the context of environmental exposures and immune diseases.

You will collaborate closely with immunologists, technicians, toxicologists, epidemiologists, physicians and statisticians within the department. We generate and have access to unique data and biobanks from various Norwegian longitudinal cohorts and health surveys, national health registries, and laboratory analyses, enabling us to gain extensive insights through comprehensive analysis.

The Section of immunology, in the Department of Method Development and Analytics, is organized under the Division of Infection Control, one of six focus areas at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. The Division’s mission is to prevent infectious diseases. The overarching goal of the Norwegian Institute of Public Health's research is that it should be of high quality, internationally competitive, and of strategic significance for the institute's societal mission and goals. 

Key responsibilities

• Research in infectious disease immunology, with special focus on high-dimensional laboratory methods
  
• Perform high-dimensional single-cell analysis, including optimalization and establishment of new laboratory methods
  
• Analyze high-dimensional and multi-omics data sets, primarily using R, in collaboration with statisticians
  
• Publish papers and reports, and present findings at national meetings and international conferences
  
• Initiate, plan and lead new relevant research projects within the strategic themes of the institute
  
• Develop and contribute to research proposals for external funding (nationally and internationally)
  
• Maintain and build national and international collaborations with relevant research environments
  
• Contribute to the development of research across the institute
  
• Participate in various departmental activities and tasks

Qualifications

• PhD degree in immunology or a related field, such as cellular physiology, medicine, biophysics
  
• Hands on experience with relevant laboratory methods and development of protocols is required
  
• Experience with interdisciplinary research within immunology and biostatistics, resulting in a track record of peer-reviewed international publications will be prioritized
  
• Good knowledge in high-dimensional immune data analysis, including multiparametric flow or mass cytometry (CyTOF) and serum protein profiling will be emphasized
  
• R competence is an advantage
  
• Experience with project management is an advantage
  
• An international network is an advantage
  
• Prior successful acquisition of external funding is an advantage
  
• Good communication and writing skills in English is required, while Norwegian (or another Scandinavian language) is an advantage. Candidates who do not speak Norwegian at the time of employment must be willing and motivated to learn Norwegian
