NORCE is a leading research institute in Earth observation and remote sensing, with a strong track record in developing operational SAR and InSAR systems. Our Earth Observation (EO) Group, appointed as an ESA Expert Support Laboratory for the SAR Mission Performance Cluster, has built advanced frameworks for SAR/InSAR processing that underpin large-scale InSAR-based ground motion services in Norway and Europe (e.g. InSAR Norway and EGMS). The group of ~25 scientists combine expertise in radar signal processing with applied research spanning cryosphere (snow, glaciers, sea ice, permafrost), geohazards, infrastructure stability, and ocean monitoring. We work in close collaboration with the European Space Agency, the Norwegian Space Agency, and several national and international partners.

We are now seeking a candidate with a background in SAR/InSAR signal processing and time series algorithms, combined with strong expertise from an application domain that strengthens the group’s current activities.

Key responsibilities (dependent on experience level of applicant)
  • Develop and improve multi-temporal InSAR processing algorithms (e.g., time series analysis, phase unwrapping, noise mitigation, filtering, atmospheric/ionospheric corrections), with an emphasis on operational, large-scale satellite SAR datasets such as Sentinel-1 and NISAR.

  • Apply technical skills to improve the state-of-the-art within relevant application domains

  • Publish results in high-impact journals and present them at international conferences.

  • Lead or contribute to research proposals to ESA, the Norwegian Research Council, Horizon Europe, and similar funding programs.

Required qualifications
  • Strong background in SAR interferometry and time series analysis.

  • PhD in electrical engineering, physics, Earth science, or related field.

  • Proficiency in scientific programming (e.g., Python) and working with Linux/Unix environments.

  • Solid mathematical/statistical skills.

Preferred/desired qualifications
  • Experience in applying for ESA projects, Horizon Europe, and similar.

  • Strong (inter-)national network in field of application.

  • Experience with high-performance computing (HPC) and large datasets.

  • Experience with machine learning applied to geophysical signals.

  • Experience in managing research projects.

We encourage early career (post PhD), mid-career and senior researchers to apply.

What we offer

  • Access to large datasets and state-of-the-art processing infrastructure.

  • Collaboration with leading partners in Europe and worldwide.

  • Competitive salary and benefits.

  • Flexibility for career development and independence.

  • Good pension and insurance schemes.
