The new National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design opened on 11th June 2022 is the largest art museum in the Nordic countries. The National Museum’s mandate is to develop, conserve, research, make available and promote public knowledge about Norway’s largest collection of art, architecture and design.

The National Museum holds a substantial collection of historical frames spanning six centuries, many of which are displayed in our exhibitions and frequently loaned together with the artworks they originally frame.
We are seeking a motivated and experienced conservator to take responsibility for the care and preservation of this historical frame collection. The position will provide a unique opportunity to establish frame conservation as a professional field both at the National Museum and in Norway.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the documentation and registration of the frame collection, conduct condition assessments, make treatment recommendations, and carry out necessary surface treatments to ensure the safe display, transport, and storage of frames in the collection. Working within a dynamic environment alongside a dedicated, multidisciplinary team of conservators, curators, and technicians, this role will contribute to exhibitions, loans, storage, and other relevant projects as agreed with the supervisor.
Arbeidsoppgaver
Key Responsibilities:- Documentation and registration of frames in the museum’s collections management database.
- Carry out preventive conservation and housekeeping duties.
- Carry out work related to exhibitions and loans.
- Carry out surface treatments, the conservation and restoration of decorative elements and assist with structural treatments related to frames.
- Conduct and coordinate technological investigations.
- Communicate frame conservation practices to internal and external stakeholders.
- Conduct research and documentation of frames, including their historical classification and nomenclature.
- Acquire new knowledge and practical skills related to the conservation of the frame collection and to the conservation field more broadly, through in-depth project work, in line with the museum’s strategic priorities and planning.
- Complete additional tasks as agreed with the supervisor.
Kvalifikasjoner
Education:Experience: / Qualifications:
- At least one year of demonstrated experience in conservation is required, with practical hands-on work on historical frames.
- Proven experience in a gallery or museum setting, with duties related to exhibition display and the care and handling of collections.
Please note that all documents must be in English or a Scandinavian language.

- Possess strong organisational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to plan effectively and to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to produce clear and accurate documentation.
- Good oral and written communication skills, preferably in Norwegian and English.
