About the position
Financial institutions have to verify many documents in their daily business. These include applications for loans, mortgages, or personal documents such as certificates of ownership. Generative AI possesses the ability to generate realistic sequences of texts, and documents.
The position’s research focus is directed toward methods to automatically detect generated, or altered content in documents submitted to a financial institution. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to define concrete research avenues. Possible direction include:
- Detecting AI-generated text in communication with bank clients.
- Detecting alterations to incoming invoices.
- Efficiently comparing incoming documents to existing documents
The research of this position will be conducted in collaboration with industry partners in the geographic region.

About the project
The project will run under the umbrella of the AURA (Advanced Understanding and Development of AI for Regional Advancement) project. The project is a collaboration between Sparebank 1 SMN and NTNU’s Norwegian Open AI Lab (NAIL). Over five year research will investigate responsible AI, combating financial crime, and developing expertise for businesses.
The main goals of the project are to create values through AI for the society, contribute to innovation, and increase competence. There are three work packages:
- AI for Safety
- Responsible AI
- Innovation Hub
The position is associated with the AI for Safety work package. The work package aims to use AI to prevent white collar crime.
Duties of the position
- Carry out high-quality research within the area of the position.
- Deploy your work in collaboration with industrial partners of the region (if relevant).
- Produce academic publications and popular science dissemination.
- Participate in the work associated with the AURA project.
- Mentoring MSc students, helping them with their research projects, and advising on methodology and academic writing.
- Unless proficient in a Scandinavian language, the candidate will attend Norwegian courses.
Required selection criteria
- You must have completed a doctoral degree in (machine learning, statistics, or similar).
- You must have a professionally relevant background in algorithms, machine learning, database systems, or data mining.
- Experience with different generative AI approaches such as transformer, or diffusion models.
- Very good programming skills in either Python, Julia, or R.
- Have excellent skills in mathematics and probabilistic AI.
- Good written and oral English
If you do not already have educational competence that meets the requirements for a position as associate professor in Norway, NTNU will arrange for you to acquire such competence during the employment period. In such cases, you will also be assigned relevant teaching as part of the career-promoting work.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with NTNUs guidelines for recruitment positions and Regulations concerning the degrees of philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) in artistic development work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)for general criteria for the position.
Preferred selection criteria
- Good understanding of generative AI, and extensive experience with Large Language Models (LLMs)
- Experience with implementing prototypic systems to demonstrate research results (provide link to GitHub/GitLab or similar)
- Interest in the financial sector
- Norwegian language skills

Salary and conditions
As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 633 400,- per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years.
The position is conditional on external funding.
As an employee at NTNU, it is important to keep yourself up to date with academic and organizational changes and to adapt to them.
For the necessary professional and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.
The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the State Employees Act, and Export control (legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services). Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, are considered to bein conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to be employed

- Academic works - published or unpublished (up to 5 items).

Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.
If you have had leave or another break in your career, it is important that this is stated in your application so that the selection committee can take this into account and that the amount of your research may be reduced as a result.
In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal qualities. Motivation, ambitions and potential for research will also be emphasized in the assessment of the candidates.
