We are looking for a veterinarian to work in a mixed veterinary practice on Dønna in Nordland. The practice covers both companion animals and farm animals. The position is intended for a veterinarian interested in a long-term collaboration and independent work within a small, well-functioning team.

The goal of this hire is to build a team of two veterinarians who can share the workload, on-call duties, and the responsibility for ensuring continuity of veterinary care.

Scope of work

The practice has a mixed profile:

  • about 50% small animals -- mainly dogs and cats,

  • about 50% farm animals -- mainly cattle,

  • occasionally horses and sheep, mainly during the spring period.

Work takes place both at the clinic and out in the field. A typical day involves an average of about 6 call-outs, of which about 3 take place at the clinic and about 3 in the field.

Work with cattle includes, among other things:

  • insemination,

  • treatment,

  • preventive care,

  • assistance with calving,

  • basic diagnostics and procedures.

During periods with a higher number of calvings, the workload may increase. Outside of scheduled visits, the practice does not require continuous patient intake, so the way work is organized allows for a good amount of time outside professional duties.

On-call duty

Night and weekend on-call duty is organized as a stand-by (on-call-by-phone) system. Depending on the situation, it may involve, among other things:

  • emergencies,

  • calvings,

  • inseminations,

  • other interventions requiring a veterinarian's presence.

Once a second veterinarian is hired, on-call duty will be shared between the two vets. For each full week of on-call duty, 2.5 additional days off are granted. This system compensates for periods of increased availability with a correspondingly longer time off.

Onboarding period

The first month is dedicated to onboarding and getting familiar with the local specifics of the practice. During this period, the new veterinarian works together with the current veterinarian and gets to know:

  • clients and local farms,

  • the practice's work organization,

  • the on-call system,

  • the specifics of working on the islands,

  • local working conditions,

  • the Norwegian veterinary system.

The goal is to prepare the veterinarian for later, independent work.

Financial terms

First month (onboarding): 30,000 NOK gross

After becoming independent (annually): approx. 1,500,000 NOK gross / year

In addition, for the onboarding period we provide company housing and cover the cost of travel to Norway. The final salary level after becoming independent depends on the scope of duties, experience, and participation in on-call duty.

Clinic equipment

  • laboratory,

  • hematology analyzer,

  • biochemistry analyzer,

  • microscope,

  • ultrasound (USG),

  • digital X-ray (DDR),

  • dental X-ray,

  • dental equipment,

  • inhalation anesthesia machine with cardiac monitor,

  • electrocautery,

  • endoscope / bronchoscope.

Transport

The work also includes visits to other islands. Transport between islands is by water taxi, and transport costs related to carrying out professional duties are covered by the employer.

Requirements

  • authorization to practice as a veterinarian in Norway,

  • experience working with small animals,

  • basic surgical skills,

  • ability to independently perform a caesarean section on a cow, dog, or sheep,

  • ability to perform cattle insemination,

  • independence and a sense of responsibility,

  • willingness to work both at the clinic and in the field.

Language

Knowledge of Norwegian is welcome but not a requirement for starting the job. It is possible to start working in English while learning Norwegian at the same time.

Dønna -- life outside work

Dønna is located on the Helgeland coast in northern Norway. The region offers access to the sea, mountains, and vast natural areas. It is a place suited to people who value a calm pace of life, outdoor activity, and a small community.

Work is organized so that veterinarians can take advantage of longer periods off, including planning a longer holiday during the summer.
