Helping societies better manage risks will ensure that crises do not undermine or destroy important structures of our society like the energy supply, urban areas, transport infrastructure, or industrial value chains. IFEs Department Risk and Safety conducts research, development and consultancy in risk and safety related to digital systems in critical infrastructure. We collaborate with national and international partners, working on projects funded by the EU, the Norwegian Research Council, industry clients, and the OECD NEA Halden Project. Our team has experience in applied research and consultancy, working on complex digital systems. With a long history in providing research on Software Dependability and Digital Instrumentation and Control (D&IC) within the nuclear field, the specialists in the department is today involved with competence in Safety Case, Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS) in projects within nuclear, transport, hydrogen, energy and critical infrastructure.
The Department of Risk and Safety is looking for a Researcher and Senior Researcher within Risk and Safety that would like to contribute to more resilient society.
For senior researchers, the role includes developing and leading research projects, writing proposals, and forming collaborations with external partners. Senior researchers will also contribute to guiding junior team members and ensuring that projects meet their objectives. We aim to provide an environment where researchers at all levels can develop their expertise, collaborate with others, and contribute to meaningful advancements in risk management.
Duties and responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities:
- Participation in the joint Halden Project and other research activities related to safety assessment of digital I&C systems
- Conduct applied research and client projects within safety
- Contribute to writing of applications for external funding
- Contribute to development of competence within the group
- Report to the research manager
In addition for Senior Researcher:
- Lead and manage projects
- Initiate and secure funding through national and international research proposals
- Collaborate with industry and government partners to translate research into impactful solutions
- Supervise and mentor junior researchers, fostering a collaborative research environment
- Play a key role in advancing risk and safety research, representing IFE in professional forums, publications, and strategic initiatives
Qualifications
Desired Qualifications:- Good knowledge of risk and safety assessment of systems that include software
- Good knowledge of safety case
- Good knowledge of system and/or software development
- Knowledge or interest to work with nuclear safety and/or hydrogen safety
- Good communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly
- Minimum Master´s degree or similar within computer science or technical subjects
In addition for Senior Researcher:
- Significant research experience in risk management, safety case, computer science, or a related field that aligns with the department’s research focus
- Proven track record in leading research projects, marketing and securing funding
- Strong networking skills, with the ability to build collaborations across academia, industry, and government
- Experience from leadership roles and coordination of research projects
- Preferably experience mentoring researchers and guiding project teams
Education Level: College/University, Master/PhD grade

Safety MTO (Man- Technology- Organisation).
The main goal of IFE's Safety-MTO research is to produce quantitative knowledge about human possibilities and limitations in a control room environment. We conduct research assignments for the international Halden Reactor Project as well as research projects for the petroleum, transport and nuclear industry.
