Position as PhD Research Fellow in science education available at Department of Geosciences.

The fellowship period is three years.

A fourth year may be considered and it will involve 25 % of other career-promoting work. Other career-promoting work may consist of teaching, supervision, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department.

Starting date no later than October 1, 2026.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

Place of work is at the Department of Geosciences, science education sections at Blindern, Oslo.

Job description

Design, Nudge, Support: Co-Creating Student Success in STEM

The advertised position forms part of a collaborative research and development project involving the science education sections for Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Geosciences at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo. The project aims to support students in achieving their academic goals, with a particular focus on the first-year students.

The project starting point is that successful education is co-created by students and staff. The project will therefore identify challenges, explore solutions, and co-create interventions in collaboration with students and staff in order to support students’ well-being, motivation, and learning. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in all of these activities. In collaboration with the science education research groups at the faculty, the candidate will gather and analyse data to explore student and staff experiences, focusing on practices that support learning. Examples include academic “nudging” techniques, collaborative practices, and use of AI as a resource for learning. Combining co-creation and systematic education design, the project uses Educational Design Research (EDR) to systematically combine design, development and research over several cycles.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

• Master’s degree or equivalent in science education, or pedagogy, or a combination of a STEM master’s degree and pedagogical education.
• Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
• Good working knowledge of a Scandinavian language
• Candidates without a master’s degree have until 30.06.2026 to complete the final exam.
   

• Good collaborative skills are important as the candidate will work in close collaboration with students and staff.
• The candidate is goal-oriented and able to work independently and in a structured manner.
• Strong analytical skills and academic writing skills
• Experience with qualitative research methods
• Experience with research and development related to higher education in STEM
   

In the evaluation of the applications, emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability to carry out the project within the allotted time frame and to contribute to the main project.

Grade requirements:
The norm is as follows:

• The average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
• The average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
• The Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system

• Salary in position as PhD Research Fellow, position code 1017 in salary range NOK from 550 800 - 595 000, depending on competence and experience. From the salary, 2 percent is deducted in statutory contributions to the State Pension Fund
