The Division of Diagnostics and Technology at Akershus University Hospital is committed to advancing the precision treatment and diagnosis of cancer and other medical conditions through cutting-edge technologies, such as AI and high-throughput sequencing. We are seeking a highly motivated and technically well versed Bioinformatician to join our dynamic molecular pathology team and contribute to our mission of improving cancer diagnostics and treatment strategies. The position will initially be under The Section for Molecular Pathology and Research, but will likely be reorganized and expanded to encompass other medical areas, offering the potential for interdisciplinary collaboration, including the fields of medical biochemistry, pharmacology, immunology, and microbiology.

Description
As a Bioinformatician in the Section for Molecular Pathology and Research in the Department of Pathology, you will play a key role in the analysis of high-throughput NGS data, specifically from Illumina and Thermo Fisher platforms, to investigate the genetic alterations in cancer patients. You will collaborate closely with molecular biologists, researchers, pathologists, and clinicians to interpret sequencing data, both within the daily diagnostic routine, as well as in support ongoing cancer research projects, and publications. This position offers an excellent opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary environment at the forefront of diagnostics and research both within and outside cancer. In addition, the position entails a role in the collaborative environment of the national InPreD network (Infrastructure for Precision Cancer Diagnostics).
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform bioinformatics analysis of NGS data (Illumina and Thermo Fisher platforms) to identify genetic mutations, structural variants, and other key biomarkers in cancer patients.
- Develop and implement pipelines/workflows, including read mapping, variant calling, and other genomic data processing tasks.
- Maintain version control and collaborative code development using Git.
- Develop and optimize scripts and pipelines using Bash, R, and Python.
- Work with bioinformatics tools such as SAMtools, Snakemake, nextflow, and other related software.
- Analyze and interpret complex genomic data to uncover insights into disease mechanisms, treatment responses, and patient outcomes.
- Develop and implement bioinformatics pipelines and workflows for data processing, analysis, and visualization.
- Collaborate with cancer researchers, clinicians, and other bioinformaticians to design and support research projects.
- Contribute to writing manuscripts, reports, and presentations based on research findings.
- Stay up-to-date with advancements in bioinformatics tools and genomics research.
- Provide bioinformatics support and expertise to other members of the department.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, or a related field; MSc will be considered with proven experience.
- Experience with the analysis of NGS data, particularly from Illumina and Thermo Fisher platforms.
- Cluster experience able to utilize and manage HPC cluster resources for large-scale data processing.
- Experience with genomic data analysis software and databases (e.g., GATK, STAR, Bowtie, Variant Calling, and annotation tools).
- A basic understanding of containerisation technologies (like singularity or docker).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work with complex datasets.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal English; the ability to communicate in Norwegian within six months is expected.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with data generated by TSO500 Illumina panel.
- Experience with UiO's Tjenester for Sensitive Data (TSD; an HPC with slurm workload manager)
- Experience working in research and diagnostic settings.
- Knowledge of personalized medicine.
- Familiarity with GitHub/GitLab or similar.
- Proficient in Norwegian. The preferred work language is Norwegian, so the ability to communicate in Norwegian/Swedish will be weighted heavily.
