About the position

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated PhD candidate with a background in neuroscience, biology, biotechnology, quantitative biology, other physical sciences or engineering, to apply to a recently developed, cutting-edge (unpublished) miniature two-photon microscopes to perform pioneering work establishing the cellular basis of posture coding in the neocortex. The successful candidate will perform neural recordings in a laboratory setting while tracking multiple aspects of behavior in rodents. They should have a good intuition for rodent behavior, steady hands, and a strong motivation for analyzing large neural & behavioral datasets.

About the institute and associated labs

The Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at NTNU. It was established as a Centre of Excellence in 2002, again in 2012 and again in 2023, which has never happened before in Norway. It was designated as a Kavli Foundation Institute in 2007 (www.kavlifoundation.org). The work of its two founding directors, Edvard and May-Britt Moser, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2014.

The position is part of a collaboration between the research groups of Assoc. Prof. Weijian Zong (group page here) and Prof. Jonathan Whitlock (https://www.whitlocklab.org/) at the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience (KISN). The student will be co-supervised by both Zong and Whitlock. The collaborative project will combine the Whitlock lab’s quantitative approach to naturalistic animal behavior with the field-leading mini-2photon (MINI-2P) imaging technology from the Zong lab.

The Whitlock group was established at KISN under the auspices of an ERC starting grant in 2014. The lab pioneered a platform combining single-unit recordings in freely moving rats with 3D motion capture, resulting in the discovery the neural encoding of body posture spanning the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and frontal motor cortex (M2) (Mimica et al., Science, 2018). The group showed more recently that such tuning extends to primary cortical areas (A1, V1, S1 and M1; Mimica et al., Nat. Commun., 2023). Dr. Zong established his group at the Kavli Institute in 2023, focusing on developing cutting-edge optical tools to monitor and manipulate neural activity in naturally behaving animals, with the goal of understanding the rulesets underlying computation in cortical microcircuits. Dr. Zong has extensive experience in cutting-edge optical and laser instrumentation, including the development and application of the MINI-2P—enabling multiplane imaging of thousands of neurons in the cortex of freely moving mice (W. Zong et al., Cell, 2022). This transformative technology was featured in Nature (write-up here) and is now commercially available and used in universities and research institutions around the world.

Both Zong and Whitlock hold FRIPRO grants from the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and are supported by the Centre of Excellence funding Scheme by the RCN (the Centre for Algorithms in the Cortex), as well as the Kavli Foundation. The Zong group is further supported through the Norwegian Brain Initiative (NORBRAIN) for the development of next generation MINI-2P microscopes for ultrahigh throughput, multi-brain-region and voltage imaging in freely moving animals. The current position will be associated with these projects.

Required selection criteria

At the time of starting the position, you must have a relevant Master’s degree in neuroscience, biology, medicine, physics, electronic engineering, optics, nanoscience, biomedical engineering, or related fields with a strong motivation to adapt new technology to answer neuroscience questions.
Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level. Master students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position.
You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you maybe considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's Doctoral Programme
Excellent communication skills in English are imperative, both orally and written.
Documented experience with scientific programming (e.g. Python, Matlab, R; any history of activity on GitHub) as well as computational or statistical methods for data analysis.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with NTNUs guidelines for recruitment positions and Regulations for the degrees philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) and philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) in artistic development work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)for general criteria for the position.

Preferred selection criteria

Prior experience recording from awake behaving animals (the current project will use MINI-2P Ca2+ imaging).
Documented experience with processing and analyzing neural imaging data including calcium or voltage imaging.
Techniques used in cellular and molecular neuroscience (e.g. optogenetics, cell patching, virus design).
Documented experience with rodents’ surgery and experiments (e.g. a certificate from the course in Animal Research or equivalent).

Present and discuss your research with other professionals

Analyze data, assess different perspectives and draw well-founded conclusions
Be flexible and open to adjusting the plan for the project as needed

Applicants are expected to bring a strong motivation for pushing the front edge of neuroscience technology, a good intuition for working with animals, and a solid understanding of systems neuroscience. You should also have strong communication skills and be able and interested to work within a results-oriented, interdisciplinary team, with a strong motivation to develop new methods to understand neural algorithms in the mammalian brain.

Salary and conditions

In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 550 800,-per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.

The employment period is 4 years.

For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in medicine within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme through out the period of employment.
