About the position

The Language Acquisition and Language Processing Lab (LALP) at NTNU is looking to hire a postdoc (100%) for a temporary position. The position is a fixed term position for a duration of 3 years. Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. No person may hold more than one fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

Expected starting date: January 2026.

The LALP lab is located in the Department of Language and Literature (ISL) at the Faculty of Humanities (HF), NTNU. The LALP Lab is the oldest and best equipped experimental lab in Norway with a 20-year history and has contributed excellent research in the domain of language development and language processing. The equipment includes Tobii eye-tracking systems and EyeLink 1000; EEG and fNIRS; FURHAT Robot and allows for studying language behaviour (time-course and quantity of gaze/eye-movements), neuro-physiology of language processing in the brain and neuro-imaging (https://www.ntnu.edu/langdevlab#/view/publications).

The main responsibility of the postdoc will be to conduct research in the newly awarded ERC Synergy grant SHAPE (https://www.ntnu.edu/shape/). This will involve (but is not limited to) designing behavioural and other studies of visuo-perceptual and language skills in toddlers at risk for autism, recruiting and testing participants, as well as data processing and analysis. The main goals of SHAPE are to map out the relationship between the visual perception of shape and its encoding across languages in the world and to identify the factors which constrain the observed cross-linguistic variation. SHAPE is also concerned with developmental trajectories in these domains and relies on tight collaboration with leading researchers in the field in the USA, the UK, Germany and France.

Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department.

Duties of the position

Designing and conducting studies of visuo-spatial and language skills in toddlers at risk for autism in comparison with neuro-typically developing children
Recruiting and testing participants
Analysing datasets, preparing manuscripts for submission and publishing research papers
Supporting the NTNU SHAPE PIs in implementing the NTNU team SHAPE research agenda in collaboration with the external ERC Synergy teams
Assisting the Corresponding PIs in SHAPE in coordinating grant-wide activities and deliverables

Required selection criteria

completed doctoral degree in psychology, developmental science or cognitive science or similar domain
training and experience with at least one technical research method for gathering or analyzing data (e.g., eye tracking, EEG/ERP, acoustic analysis in Praat)
excellent statistical skills
experience in research on autism and/or developmental science
good written and oral English language skills

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 633 400,- per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years (01.01.2026 – 31.12.2028), depending on whether there is a need to include courses within educational competence.

The position is conditional on external funding.
