The position
A PhD position is available at the Department of Geosciences, Faculty of Science and Technology in terrestrial Quaternary and glacial geology with the aim of reconstructing the Late Quaternary glacial and environmental history of Svalbard using mainly terrestrial geological data. The project is within the Sedimentary Systems, Paleoclimates and Environments group.
The position is for a period of four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year is distributed as 25 % each year and will consist of teaching and other duties relevant for the Department of Geosciences. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.
The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.
The position’s field of research
The configuration and dynamics of the Late Weichselian Svalbard-Barents Sea Ice Sheet (SBSIS) is relatively well understood in comparison to the SBSIS during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 4 (c. 71-57 kyr BP) and the subsequent interstadial in MIS 3 (c. 57-29 kyr BP). This project aims to reconstruct the glacial and environmental history of Svalbard during MIS 4 and 3 based on terrestrial geological archives. On Svalbard, key terrestrial sedimentary sequences provide an opportunity for such studies. For example, shallowing-upwards emergence sequences deposited during glacioisostatic rebound indicate large-scale glaciation during MIS 4. However, there is a scarcity of empirical field data available to constrain the extent, configuration, dynamic behavior, timing, and pattern of deglaciation of this ice sheet. Knowledge of the ice-sheet boundary conditions and geological environments in Svalbard since the MIS 4 stadial and into the MIS 3 interstadial is fragmented, and there are large uncertainties on the timing and nature of this period, advocating for new datings and improved geochronological control.
Identification and mapping of raised beaches and other sea-level related landforms above the Late Weichselian marine limit can potentially provide new knowledge about the deglaciation after MIS 4 and the subsequent glacioisostatic rebound. Several sites have been identified on Svalbard, but their age, depositional processes, and indication of relative sea level is not understood in detail. Therefore, this project aims to fill this knowledge gap, contributing with new geomorphological, sedimentological, and geochronological data from Svalbard.
The applicants must present a description outlining the academic basis of the PhD project. The project description shall not exceed 2 pages, literature references included. It must include a description of the topic, 3-5 key research question(s) and a reasoning of the choices. It should also indicate the methodologies to be used. The final project description will be developed in cooperation with the supervisor.
