IFE has a strong activity in multiphase flow modelling and experimentation, with a long track record of developing leading technologies and infrastructure for studying complex transport systems.
The Department for Flow Technology operates large-scale experimental facilities such as the Well Flow Loop and FALCON, where multiphase transport phenomena are studied under realistic industrial conditions.
Our competence spans applied physics, fluid dynamics, and environmental and petroleum engineering, combining high-pressure experimentation with advanced numerical modelling.
This Researcher / Senior Researcher position is for a three-year engagement with the possibility of transition to a permanent researcher role at IFE.
Main tasks
As part of our team, you will work in close collaboration with industry partners and other research institutes to develop modelling tools for industrial use. Due to an increase in the project portfolio we are now looking for a new researcher (PhD) with a mind-set to work at the intersection between basic/academic research and industrial application.
Main tasks for this position include:
- Conduct experimental research on multiphase flow phenomena in the Well Flow Loop, including degassing, foam transport, and flow assurance challenges.
- Develop and validate models for multiphase transport processes, linking experimental results with numerical simulations.
- Collaborate with industrial partners and research institutions to address challenges in petroleum, geothermal energy, and environmental applications.
- Analyse and interpret complex datasets, publish results in high-impact journals, and contribute to project proposals and new research initiatives.
Qualifications
- PhD in fluid dynamics, geoscience, chemical or mechanical engineering, or applied physics.
- Strong track record in multiphase flow, including both experimental methods and numerical modelling.
- Experience with high-pressure experimental systems and transport in porous and fractured media.
- Proven publication record in international journals.
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and industrially oriented research environment.
Desired:
- Experience with petroleum technology, geothermal systems, or groundwater remediation.
- Familiarity with industrial applications of multiphase transport and flow assurance.
- Strong collaborative skills and motivation to bridge academic and industrial research.
Personality
The Department depends on tight bonds with our industrial customers and partners and we are therefore looking for a person with the right attitude towards working with industrial customers.
- Independent person.
- High degree of initiative and creativity.
- Solution oriented.
- Enjoy cooperation with colleagues and industrial customers.
We offer
- Exciting and challenging tasks
- Participation in a leading international research team
- Social benefits including pension, life insurance, and accident insurance
- Salary according to agreement
IFE is subject to the Security Act, which includes requirements for the organisation’s management of critical national information, as well as other relevant legislation concerning the management of sensitive information. On this basis, it is a prerequisite for employment that the applicant is suitable from a security perspective. Note that relevant applicants will be asked questions that are necessary to ascertain this. This includes questions about any ties to countries that the Norwegian National Security Authority (PST) has classified as a ‘high-risk country’ in its open threat assessment. Background checks are performed as part of our recruitment process.
We view diversity as a strength in our work. We therefore encourage all qualified candidates to apply regardless of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion and ethnic background. We place great emphasis on your personal suitability for the position.
