Do you want to build software that connects the digital and physical worlds?
We are a global Technology company, driving energy innovation for a balanced planet.
As the demand for energy increases, so does our need for motivated talent to meet the engineering and technical challenges of today’s energy industry.
Our company has numerous career opportunities that will let you prove your abilities from your first day, throughout your career, and beyond into the wider world of SLB.
By joining our team, you will be embarking on a unique journey with the world's leading provider of technology to the global energy industry.
We welcome applications from aspiring talents to seasonal experts alike and will do a full evaluation based on motivation, educational background, and experience.
About the role
SLB is looking for a Software Development Engineer to join the Digital Engineering team within the Kristiansand Rig Equipment organization.
The role combines development of new software solutions with lifecycle maintenance, modernization, and continuous improvement of the existing portfolio.
This is not a conventional business software role.
You will work close to the equipment and contribute to software that monitors, controls, simulates, and supports complex machines operating in demanding industrial environments.
The scope also includes cloud-enabled services and software capabilities supporting our evolving analytics platform.
You will contribute throughout the software lifecycle, from requirements and architecture through implementation, integration, testing, validation, deployment, and operational support.
We prefer experienced developers who can take ownership of technical solutions, while motivated junior candidates with a strong technical foundation are also encouraged to apply.
About you
You are a practical and quality-conscious developer who enjoys seeing software interact with real equipment.
You are comfortable moving between application code, system interfaces, laboratory testing, and technical discussions with other engineering disciplines.
You value reliable solutions over unnecessary complexity and are motivated by solving operational challenges with software that has a visible effect in the physical world.
Main responsibilities
-
Design, develop, test, and maintain software solutions supporting the SLB Rig Equipment portfolio.
-
Develop desktop applications, services, user interfaces, backend components, and APIs using C#,.NET, WPF, WinUI, and related technologies.
-
Develop and integrate software components that communicate with hardware, control systems, sensors, simulators, and industrial equipment.
-
Contribute to real-time and event-driven software where deterministic behavior, performance, reliability, and safe machine interaction are important.
-
Develop cloud-enabled services and integration capabilities that support data collection, remote functionality, analytics, and optimization use cases.
-
Modernize established applications, platforms, and architecture while maintaining continuity and reliability for operational users.
-
Translate client, product, and operational needs into clear requirements, user stories, interfaces, and maintainable technical solutions.
-
Participate in architecture discussions, design reviews, code reviews, estimation, planning, and technical documentation.
-
Create and maintain automated unit, integration, and system tests; support laboratory simulation, prototype integration, and equipment validation.
-
Apply version control, configuration management, CI/CD, cybersecurity, observability, and quality practices appropriate to industrial and cloud software.
-
Investigate software defects and operational issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement sustainable corrective actions.
-
Collaborate with software, controls, electrical, mechanical, systems, data, product, and service disciplines.
Qualifications and experience
-
Bachelor's or master's degree in software engineering, computer science, automation, cybernetics, or a related discipline.
-
Relevant practical experience may also be considered.
-
Experience with C# and.NET software development.
-
Expected depth of experience will be adapted for junior and experienced applicants.
-
Experience developing maintainable software across one or more areas such as desktop applications, backend services, APIs, cloud services, or real-time systems.
-
Understanding of object-oriented design, software architecture, testing, debugging, concurrency, interfaces, and reliable coding practices.
-
Familiarity with Git or another version-control system and modern build, test, and CI/CD workflows.
-
Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively in multidisciplinary and international teams.
-
Good written and spoken English.
Preferred experience
-
Knowledge of drilling control systems, rig control systems, machine control, industrial automation, or other reliability- or safety-critical systems.
-
Experience interfacing software with PLCs, embedded systems, sensors, actuators, industrial communication protocols, or physical equipment.
-
Experience with real-time, distributed, event-driven, or high-availability software systems.
-
Experience with cloud platforms, containerized services, messaging, APIs, data integration, monitoring, or software supporting analytics platforms.
-
Experience with WPF and/or WinUI; familiarity with C++ or other languages used for performance-sensitive or equipment-near components is an advantage.
-
Experience maintaining and modernizing established software products while supporting operational users.
-
Familiarity with secure software development and engineering processes in a quality-controlled environment.
What makes this opportunity different
-
Your code can move beyond the screen: it may monitor equipment, exchange real-time data, support machine control, or help validate how complex systems behave.
-
Work across the full technology chain, from equipment and control-system interfaces to desktop applications, cloud services, and analytics enablement.
-
Use laboratories, simulators, prototypes, and physical equipment to integrate and verify the software you develop.
-
Contribute to both new digital capabilities and the long-term evolution of software already used in demanding industrial operations.
-
Collaborate directly with specialists in software, controls, automation, data, electrical, mechanical, and systems engineering.
We can offer
-
An international working environment and career opportunities throughout the entire SLB system.
-
A friendly work environment where personal development and learning is encouraged.
-
Collaborate with software, engineering, simulation, product, and operational specialists.
-
Great colleagues from all around the world.
-
Good working environment.
-
Competitive salary and benefits.
Please apply for this position as soon as possible.
Application should include resume, motivational letter, and grades/diplomas from your education.
