The Norwegian Military Academy (Krigsskolen), Department of Land Power (Seksjon for Landmakt) is seeking an associate professor with a background in military studies, history, or political science, who wishes to contribute to the education of future military leaders through teaching and research in the field of strategy.
The Norwegian Military Academy is part of the Norwegian Defence University College (FHS) and educates leaders for the Army, offering accredited bachelor’s degrees in military studies and leadership with a specialization in land power. As part of the Defence University College, the Academy belongs to Norway’s foremost academic environment in military power, security, and defence policy, and also contributes to the college’s master’s programmes.
Research and teaching are the core responsibilities of this position. We seek an academic who enjoys teaching and who can develop new knowledge and engage cadets through a variety of teaching methods. You are expected to conduct independent research at a high international level while collaborating closely with colleagues and external partners. The position offers opportunities to initiate, lead, and participate in interdisciplinary projects. Your research should strengthen the Armed Forces’ understanding of modern warfare and give students insight into new perspectives and methods. Particular emphasis is placed on competence that connects strategy, operations, and tactics, and on the ability to demonstrate how these levels influence each other. Insight into low-intensity conflicts- especially their asymmetry, political complexity, and civil-military interaction - is also valued. The position requires analytical precision, academic integrity, and the ability to communicate findings in a way that benefits both the Armed Forces and society.
You will be responsible for teaching that combines theory with practical challenges, enabling students to understand land power in both operational and strategic contexts. Your teaching will support critical reflection, analytical skills, and decision-making. It should also prepare cadets for their first operational roles as platoon leaders, deputy company commanders, and battalion staff assistants. You are also expected to supervise bachelor’s and master’s students. The position requires readiness to teach across a broad range within land power.
We are looking for someone who, in addition to solid academic competence, has strong teaching skills and communicates effectively. You must be self-directed and systematic, capable of taking initiative, and committed to developing your field over time. Collaboration skills and the ability to contribute constructively in interdisciplinary teams are essential. You must thrive in a dynamic teaching environment and engage with other disciplines in a professional study programme. An understanding of how your academic expertise contributes to officer formation is required. Teaching involves close academic and personal follow-up of cadets who will become the Army’s future officers. The education is demanding and goal-oriented, and therefore sets particularly high standards for content, delivery, and instructor involvement. All staff contribute to cadets’ academic and personal development. For employees at the Academy, strong moral character and clear anchoring in the values of the Armed Forces are essential
The Norwegian Defence University College aims to be an attractive and inclusive workplace that attracts the best candidates, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, age, or ethnicity.
