About the job
The Department of Electronic Systems (IES) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has one vacancy for the position as Adjunct Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis II) in Trondheim, campus Gløshaugen. The position has a full-time equivalence of 20%, and has a fixed term of up to 4 years with the possibility of employment for further periods.
Digital hardware is an essential enabler for the development of future sustainable technological solutions, from the smallest IoT devices running on energy harvesting, through embedded systems in modern cars and autonomous vehicles, to high-end microprocessors, artificial intelligence, and large datacenters. Frontier research and education into the design of these systems is necessary to ensure academic and industrial excellence and IES is currently strengthening our team with an Adjunct Associate Professor position in digital system design and verification.
Together with experienced and enthusiastic faculty staff at the department, the candidate is expected to conduct education and research within in digital system design and verification. The hired Adjunct Associate Professor’s immediate leader is head of the "Circuit and Radio Systems group".
Duties of the position
- Actively participate in research-based education, including supervision, teaching, and course development for Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. students within digital systems design at IES.
- Participate in research within the field of digital systems design. From the perspective of this position, this concerns the methods, analysis and models that form the basis for the implementation and verification of digital systems.
Required selection criteria
You must have the following qualifications required for the position of adjunct associate professor (førsteamanuensis II):
You must have a PhD in electrical engineering or computer science in the field of digital systems design, and qualifications required for the position of associate professor as outlined in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts Section 1-4.
For the overall assessment of the application your submitted scientific works will be a major factor, as well as ability and experience in initiating and leading academic and industrial research and development relevant to the requirements of this position. NTNU is committed to following evaluation criteria for research quality according to The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment - DORA. This means that we pay special attention to the quality and professional breadth of these works. We also consider experience from research and development management and participation in research and development projects in academia and industry.
You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of bachelor, master and doctoral candidates. You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the NTNUs guidelines for academic positions. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.
Requirements for educational competence will depend on the employee's work tasks and responsibilities during the employment period. Those who carry out teaching tasks must have university pedagogical training equivalent to at least one Uniped module. Those who carry out supervision tasks must receive training/courses adapted to the relevant target group.
Preferred selection criteria
The candidate should have experience with state-of-the art Electronic Design Automation and Electronic System Level tools for ASIC, FPGA, and/or System-on-Chip design, from specifications, via implementation, to verification and test. Other preferred qualifications include:
- Interest in didactic development for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in digital hardware systems design and verification.
- Ability to attract funding and lead research and development projects in academia or industry.
- Experience with supervision of master students.
- Expertise in advanced testbench design and formal verification.
- Expertise in power- and energy efficient digital hardware systems design.
- Expertise in embedded hardware/software systems design and internet of things.
- Expertise in safe, secure, and sustainable electronic systems design.

- Self-motivated, taking initiatives and responsibilities. You will be working for a stable and affirmative atmosphere, and be supportive and encouraging towards colleagues when problems arise.

Salary and conditions
In a position as Adjunct Associate Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 690 000 – 870 000 year, corresponding with a 20% position, depending on qualifications and seniority. If you are eligible for membership at the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

- A description of the scientific works you consider most relevant, which you particularly wish to be factored into the assessment
- A list of your previous works, with details on where they have been published
- A research plan outlining proposed scope of research. Maximum 10 pages.
- Details of projects for which you have served as project manager, including information on financing, duration, and scope
- Names and contact information of three relevant referees.
It is important that you both document and reflect on your competence. You are encouraged to use the NTNUs competence matrix as a guide for documentation of your competence.
Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.
In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates.
NTNU is obliged by the evaluation criteria for research quality in accordance with The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment – DORA and The obligations in the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment ( CoARA) on responsible assessment of research and recognition of a wider range of academic contributions to science and society. This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date. We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.
Your application will be considered by an expert committee. Candidates of interest will be invited to an interview, and to deliver a trial teaching session.
