About the position

Climate change influences the magnitudes and return periods of heavy rainfall, storm surges, landslides, and many other stressors and shocks with dire consequences for civil infrastructure. The research group within civil engineering focuses climate resilient infrastructure using measurement data to support the assessment of the resilience of critical infrastructures in waterfront communities. 

Fjordlab Ålesund is an important and rapidly growing sensor and observation platform that contain a wealth of data in the domain of met-ocean, stormwater system, water supply system, structural systems, energy systems, ecosystem, acoustics and more. This position aims to develop an AI-based hazard and resilience assessment platform for selected harbors focusing on structures and contaminants by leveraging on data from Fjordlab Ålesund. The position will be in close collaboration with international research groups and directly involved in ongoing research projects at the department. The candidate will also play an important role in strengthening the interdisciplinary collaboration across NTNU Ålesund.

Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department. 

Duties of the position

• Carry out research of good quality
• Academic publications and popular science dissemination
• Participate in the smart infrastructure research group
• Apply for research funding and write applications and report on progress to funding sources 
• Participate in international activities such as conferences and/or research stays at foreign educational institutions 
• Mentoring students, helping them with their research projects, and advising on methodology and academic writing 

Required selection criteria

• You must have completed a doctoral degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering.
• You must have experience with designing, setting up and maintaining sensor networks for condition monitoring.
• If you are in the final phase of your doctorate and can document that the thesis has been submitted or that the defense date has been confirmed, your application can be considered even if you have not defended. NOTE: Documentation of the obtained doctorate must be presented before you can take up the position.
• Good oral and written presentation skills in English

If you do not already have educational competence that meets the requirements for a position as associate professor in Norway, NTNU will arrange for you to acquire such competence during the employment period. In such cases, you will also be assigned relevant teaching as part of the career-promoting work.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with NTNUs guidelines for recruitment positions and Regulations concerning the degrees of philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) in artistic development work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)for general criteria for the position.

As a result of the new Act relating to universities and university colleges with associated regulations of 01/08/2024, NTNU has, during a transitional period (for decisions on employment in recruitment positions before 1 August 2025), chosen to use the terms of employment in the old regulations of 31 January 2006 no. 102 on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, research fellow, scientific assistant and specialist candidate

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 604 900,- per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years, depending on whether there is a need to include courses within educational competence.(including career promotion work/ teaching duties)

The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the State Employees Act, and Export control (legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services).
