Job description
The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in Norway has a vacancy for a 3-year postdoctoral position. The postdoctoral position is based in section Bergen, Norway, and funded through the NFR-financed project «Seafood and feed resources; Ocean to Oven" (2019-2024). The project aims to generate basic knowledge needed to utilise low-trophic marine resources (like macroalgae, mussels and algae-eating fish) and other less harvested marine resources like mesopelagic organisms such novel marine resources as as food or as a feed ingredient in aquaculture.
The post doc position is connected with WP4: "Assessment of novel marine resources for human consumption". The aim of this WP is to evaluate the potential of novel marine resources to supply nutrients, and their potential risks as sources of undesirable substances (e.g. heavy metals, wax esters) when used for direct human consumption. Rodent models will be used to gain knowledge on this area.
The position is located in the Section for Seafood and Nutrition. However, the project is trans-disciplinary and collaboration across research groups at the institute and with other project partners is a necessity.
About the Research Group
The research group investigates how seafood may impact on nutrition and health. Updated recordings on the nutritional content in seafood is essential to investigate relationships between seafood intake, nutritional status and potential health effects, and to develop nutritional advices and management of nutritional security policies. Today, food from the sea represents a relatively small proportion of the world's food supply. To evaluate the potential of new marine resources for human consumption, knowledge on the content of nutrients and undesirable substances is required. We systematically analyze fish and other marine species collected in Norwegian and international waters.
Main tasks
Main tasks comprise planning and performing rodent trials in accordance with 'EFSA guidance on repeated-dose 90-day oral toxicity study on whole food/feed in rodents', as well as development of strategies and methodology to build up relevant expertise and knowledge about nutrients in novel marine resources. In addition, the position requires scientific publishing and the ability to disseminate and promote our research.
The candidate is expected to be motivated to publish research results in international peer review journals. The position also includes guidance of MSc students.

Om bedriften
The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) is one of the largest research institutes of its kind in Europe, with approximately 1,000 employees and a wide range of research facilities and laboratories of high international standard. Our main activities are research, advisory work and monitoring. The IMR owns and operates six research vessels. Our main offices are in Bergen, and we have a department in Tromsø, and research stations in Matre, Austevoll and Flødevigen.
The IMR's aim is to be a leading supplier of knowledge relating to the sustainable management of the resources in our marine ecosystems, both nationally and internationally, and the whole food chain from the sea to the table. This includes the marine environment, fish nutrition, and safe and nutritious sea food.
