PhD Candidate position available at the Department of Forensic Sciences, Oslo University Hospital
There is a fully funded position available for a PhD Candidate in the Forensic Biology Research Group for an individual with a strong background/ degree in statistics/ bioinformatics. The position is open from 01.09.2019, and will last until 01.09.2022. The candidate will carry out analysis of data generated using massively parallel sequencing (MPS). The work will be performed on two different platforms 1) Illumina MiSeq and 2) ThermoFisher Ion S5 System. The successful applicant will join a team with a strong focus on interpretation of evidence.
Areas of research
There are two main areas of research interest which the successful applicant will participate:
Population genetics of short tandem repeats (STRs) analysed using MPS. Norwegian populations will be analysed where the aim is to submit data to the STRidER database (https://strider.online/). An analysis of the benefits to casework using MPS compared to conventional DNA profiling ¿ including the development of mixture modules that will integrate with our open source software `Euroformix¿ (http://www.euroformix.com/).
a. Comparative studies with `conventional¿ methods.
b. Development of nomenclature.
c. Characterisation of MPS stutters and degradation characteristics.
d. Extend Euroformix in order to take account of the specific characteristics of MPS STR systems.
Body fluid prediction using mRNA and microbial patterns for forensic applications, complementing our previous work in this area (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.fsigen.2017.05.009). Here we are interested in expanding our capability to identify body fluids/cell types, using methods like Principle Component Analysis.
a. Expand the capability to different body fluids and tissues.
b. Discover new candidate markers.
c. Study the effect of degradation on mRNA and microbiota.
d. Investigate improved efficiency gains if data from different techniques are combined together ¿ specifically mRNA and microbiota from body fluids using existing multiplex systems.
