We are looking for our next Postdoctoral Fellow within the field of seafood/human nutrition
Jobbnorge ID: 191962
Job description
A four-year postdoctoral position within the seafood/human nutrition field, starting in early 2021, is available at the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen, Norway. The project will have 25 % duty work within the food and nutrition security sphere. The main focus will be on documentation of contamaints and nutrients in seafood, and on how these nutrients can contribute to better nutrition at a global scale. In particular, the candidate will evaluate the use of fatty acid trophic biomarkers and high-resolution heavy metal source apportionment and speciation models of deep-water marine fish communities from Europe, the Arctic, Africa and Asia.
The position is located in the Section for Seafood and Nutrition. However, the project is trans-disciplinary and collaboration across research groups at the institute and with other project partners nationally and internationally is a necessity. The position represents an excellent career opportunity for a skilled and motivated scientist aiming to be part of a productive research community, and who finds pleasure and inspiration in working at Norway's leading marine research institution.
About the research group
The research group investigates how seafood may impact on nutrition and health. Updated recordings on the nutritional content in seafood is essential to invesitgate relationships between seafood intake, nutritional status and potential health effects, and to develop nutritional advices and management of nutritional security policies.
Today, food from the sea represents a relatively small proportion of the world's food supply. To evaluate the potential of new marine resources for human consumption, knowledge on the content of nutrients and contaminants is required. To cover knowledge gaps, we systematically analyze fish and other marine species collected in Norwegian and in several international ocean basins throughout the globe.
Main tasks
- Measure essential arachidonic (ARA, 20 : 4?6), eicosapentaenoic (EPA; 20 : 5?3), erucic (22:1n-9), and docosahexaenoic (DHA, 22 : 6?3) acids in deep-water marine fish communities, including mesopelagic species and evaluate their use as trophic biomarkers in Europe, Asia, the Arctic and Africa.
- Measure mercury and selenium metal isotopes, other contamainants including persistent organic pollutants and wax esters, in deep-water marine fish communities, including mesopelagic species.
- Measure compound-specific stable isotope analysis of amino acids for nitrogen (N) and carbon (C), in deep-water marine fish communities, including mesopelagic species and compare to bulk stable isotope measurements of C and N.
- Conduct high resolution speciation measurements of mercury, arsenic, selenium, in deep-water marine fish communities, including mesopelagic species using established simultaneous GC-ICP-MS isotopic dilution methods.
- Participate 25 % of effort in the Global Action Network which aims to raise the profile of aquatic resources as a key food source for achieving food security and improved nutrition in the Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016-2025), Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) programs and accordance with the relevant UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).Our group holds the secretary function and scientific focal point within the network. The duty work is related to the secretary function of the network.

If necessary, language training will be offered and costs incurred will be reimbursed based upon completion of the language courses.
Desirable competencies
The candidate should be a collaborative worker and an independent thinker. Moreover, have strong English writing skills, and experience publishing peer-reviewed manuscripts in top tier journals. Preference will be given to applicants with experience working in marine ecosystems with contaminants and nutrient analyses.
