Job description
A Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) in Music Technology is available at the Department of Musicology, University of Oslo.
The Department of Musicology, University of Oslo, welcomes applications for one doctoral fellowship in musicology. The successful candidate will work on an independent research project in the field of new technologies for sound and music. The candidate will be supervised by Associate Professor Tejaswinee Kelkar (uio.no) and music technology research faculty at the Department of Musicology.
Applicants are required to submit a project proposal for PhD fellowship (hf.uio.no), stating research questions, theoretical framework, and methodological approaches. We are looking for proposals with a strong focus on multimodal and social aspects of sound and music computing, including one or more of the following: data-driven analyses of music perception, machine learning, computational creativity, collaborative tinkering, and motion analysis. Other topics include, but are not limited to: techno-anthropological study of new music technology, investigating baselines in music and motion from data driven perspectives. We seek a candidate with the potential to develop the discipline thematically and methodologically. They will be expected to complement and contribute to the strong research profile of our department.
The appointed candidate will gain full access to the state-of-the-art studio and lab facilities including a motion capture lab, low-latency networked music equipment, dolby atmos recording and mixing studios, and more (see website for Rooms and Equipment at Department of Musicology (uio.no)).
More about the position
The person appointed will be affiliated with the Faculty's organized research training. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD. The successful candidate is expected to join the existing research milieu or network and contribute to its development. Read more about the doctoral degree (hf.uio.no).
The appointment is for a duration of 3 years. All PhD Candidates who submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment with a written recommendation from their supervisor within 3 years or 3 ½ years after the start of their PhD position, will be offered, respectively, a 12 or 6 month Completion Grant (hf.uio.no).
Qualification requirements
- A Master's degree or equivalent in musicology, sound and music computing, music technology or another relevant field. The applicant is required to document (via coursework, or a portfolio if applicable) that the educational background corresponds to the profile for the post and is relevant to the submitted proposal. The Master's degree must have been obtained and the final evaluation must be available by the application deadline.

- Personal suitability and motivation for the position
To be eligible for admission to the doctoral programmes at the University of Oslo, applicants must, as a minimum, have completed a five-year graduation course (Master’s degree or equivalent), including a Master’s thesis of at least 30 ECTS. In special cases, the Faculty may grant admission on the basis of a one-year Master course following an assessment of the study programme’s scope and quality.
Applicants who have recently graduated with excellent results may be given preference.

- Relevance to the broader thematic research area
- Alignment with the ongoing research themes and groups at the department is prioritized
