Medical Specialist for Emergency Department, Slagelse Hospital
Do you love working with quick diagnostic assessment and stabilisation of acutely ill patients? Do you want to work in a team-oriented, multidisciplinary, dynamic and professional environment where colleagues help each other to give the patient the best possible care? Then you are the consultant or staff specialist we are looking for.
A department under development
We are expanding our back-up on-call team and are looking for a specialist with interdisciplinary and practical experience in emergency-oriented specialisations or, preferably, an emergency medicine specialist.
The Emergency Department has its own on-site back-up on-call physician 24 hours a day, all year round, and in addition to diagnosing and stabilising inpatients, we are also responsible for our own emergency room. We will train you in any of the emergency room skills you lack before you go on duty, and we are willing to individually strengthen any shortage of knowledge you might have in parts of the emergency medicine field as per agreement.
Our expectations
We take good care of each other in the Emergency Department and work hard every day to ensure the best possible treatment of the acute patients. We know that we are best when the focus is on interdisciplinarity. We therefore expect that you want to contribute to the medical professionalism and be part of a wider community. We expect that you have the medical enthusiasm and experience to autonomously provide emergency patient treatment and that you are experienced in supervising junior doctors and medical students. You must like a situation where overview and flow are the most important parameters, meaning that it is rarely possible to devote yourself completely to the treatment of individual patients. You must be motivated, open, flexible and good at working in a multidisciplinary environment, both in the department and the rest of the emergency hospital.
The general functions of the back-up on-call team in the Emergency Department:
• Overview in relation to patients who are on their way to the department and performing triage
• Receiving and performing the primary acute assessment of the patient
• Initiating relevant examinations and initial (stabilising) treatment
• Ensuring that all necessary steps are taken to stabilise the acutely ill patient
• Ensuring that all requisite healthcare groups and/or specialisations are present or summoned as needed (referral/working diagnosis)
• Serving as Emergency Response Manager in case an emergency situation arises or is reported
• Handling critical incidents during busy periods
• Having the difficult conversation and facilitating a debriefing (or defusing)
The organisation
Region Zealand has a catchment population of just over 800,000. These are served by four somatic hospitals: Roskilde/Køge Hospital, Næstved/Slagelse/Ringsted Hospital, Holbæk Hospital and Nykøbing Falster Hospital. NSR hospitals, including Slagelse Hospital, are Region Zealand’s second largest emergency hospitals and the Joint Emergency Department covers a catchment area of 350,000 residents.
The department
The Emergency Department in Slagelse is state-of-the-art and innovative with committed employees who are at the forefront of the development of Joint Emergency Departments in Denmark. We are the largest emergency department in Region Zealand with more than 70,000 contacts per year. We have 250 employees and 53 emergency beds.
Diagnosis and treatment take place in ultramodern, innovative surroundings established in 2013, equipped with everything care-givers need in the emergency treatment phase. Our ambition to become the absolute best emergency department will be realised now that the Emergency Department has been expanded by the appointment of four new medical specialists, as the hospital management has increased the staffing of the back-up on-call function to meet the ambitious plan.
The department is well-organised and tasks are performed in teams.
Attending physicians around the clock
All three on-duty/on-call areas are covered around the clock by the Emergency Department’s permanent staff specialists and doctors undergoing specialist training.
In addition, second- and back-up on-call surgical physicians (mellemvagt and bagvagt) are affiliated with the Emergency Department, and also serve as a back-up on-call team 24 hours a day for internal medicine. All work is performed in teams in close collaboration with interdisciplinary partners.
Research in focus
We are deeply involved in national networking and cross-regional project participation. In this context, we are part of Region Zealand’s development partnership with the Beth Israel Emergency Department in Boston under the Harvard Medical Faculty. The department has its own research unit with increasing activity and good opportunities for obtaining support for the initiation of research projects. The department is also assigned a clinical associate professor, who is responsible for the clinical training of medical students from the University of Copenhagen.
Slagelse Hospital
Slagelse Hospital is an acute hospital, which specialises in the rapid treatment of acute illnesses. The hospital receives acute patients around the clock and undertakes planned treatment within the following areas:
• Surgery (diseases of the stomach and intestines, gallstones, hernias, haemorrhoids, appendicitis, and cancer of the large intestine and rectum). The hospital also offers endoscopic examinations and treatment of, for example, arteriosclerosis and balloon dilation of the blood vessels
• Medical illnesses (diseases of the heart, stomach, intestines, liver, lungs, spine, hormones and metabolism, as well as rheumatism)
• Orthopaedic surgery (all types of bone fractures, hand surgery, amputations, endoscopic examinations of the knees and wrists, etc.)
• Work and medico-social illnesses (work-related problems such as stress and physical strain)
In 2013 Næstved, Slagelse and Ringsted (NSR) hospitals became an autonomous unit within the Region Zealand public hospital service, with its own hospital management and administration. As of 1 January 2015, the NSR hospitals have 3,500 employees and 622 beds.
At Næstved, Slagelse and Ringsted hospitals, we do our utmost to create a stimulating and exciting workplace, and we strive to be the best place of training in Region Zealand for many different specialist fields.
